Ok I usually like a bit of the sweet stuff such as a biscuit etc but what else could I try instead as eating a biscuit at 10pm is a bit sickly - I only ask as I went to bed on 5.5 a few nights ago and 5 last night and as I know I can drop by 1-2 I wasn't risking a hypo during the night x

I assume we're talking about something with 10-15g of carb here. So, a handful of cashew nuts, a couple of crackers with cheese ( or cheese spread and a bit of tomato), a satsuma, a small apple, some yogurt, um, I'll go on thinking!

I'm not actually sure how much I should be eating if I'm slightly low at bedtime, it has never actually been mentioned to me :( x

I was going by the rule of thumb that works for most people if their normal ratio is 1:10 . I know from experience that around 10-15 carbs will bring my levels up by about 2-3, (and looking at it in reverse, one unit of insulin will drop my level by 3) It's something you can really only find out by trial and error, (what impact a given number of carbs has on your numbers.) If you stick to late night snacks that all have around the same carb value, if you need to bring your numbers up to a safe bedtime level, and see if that brings you out in the morning with the figure you want, then you're getting it right. If not, increase or decrease the amount of carb.

I have a Nairns oatcake 6.6g of carbohydrate if I'm a bit low before bed. They aren't sweet but are biscuit like and are good at keeping my level stable without spiking me.

The night I was 5.5 I had half a lotus biscuit and woke on 5.5 last night I was 5 and had slightly over half a lotus and woke on 4.9 but at 10pm it was far too sweet would 4 squares of 85% chocolate work to keep me from dropping, sorry x

Looking at my packet, it would have about 10 carbs, so yes....but the caffeine content in dark chocolate would keep me awake. (It may not affect you, I even have to drink decaf tea after 6pm, else I'm awake til 2am!)

I'm safe on that level, caffeine doesn't really bother me thankfully 🙂 thanks for your help, its very much appreciated 🙂 x

Flower's suggestion of an oatcake sounds good, personally I would have a digestive and a bit of cheese.
Have you tried Carrs Cheese Melts at only 2.6g per biscuit or The Aldi equivalent at 3g per biscuit.
You need to experiment to find out what they do and whether you like then.

I've had carrs ones but not for years as I developed a strong liking for them and ate them all the time haha, I don't have anywhere that sells them near me though and no Aldi however my OH's work mate is always willing to pick stuff up for me at Aldi or Asda etc so might see if he'll get me some 🙂 x

I make up an options hot chocolate with milk - fab it works for me

I have noticed you like sweet stuff ! There are lots of things that have 10g of carbs, Try an orange or similar.

I have eaten biscuits etc for a long time same with chocolate I'm not going to give that up just because I now have D, I lessen other carbs to fit a bar in once a week, I cover it and keep an eye on things but most importantly is my DSN told me I did not have to completely give up on it, I still eat a healthy range of things meat, vegetables etc, I'm sorry that you don't agree with it but I'm not going to feel guilty for it sorry :( x

If I need a bit of a top up, then a digestive is good but my top tip is an oatcake with peanut or cashew butter or another nut butter. The combination of a bit of carb and protein makes for a nice gentle but quite long release of glucose (the protein in the nut butter helps if you have a 3am dip because it converts to glucose but takes a long time). I have a delightful talent for nighttime hypos, it's my special gift 😉

Kaylz just to be clear, you don't have to justify what you eat to anyone, choose what works for you. Fruit is useless to me, my body doesn't understand that it's supposed to find it more difficult to digest and it has much the same impact as jelly babies, apparently fibre is no match for my amazing digestion 🙄, given that I find a slow sustained release of glucose is best for avoiding a nighttime hypo I'd recommend a bit of a protein carb mix. You might want to have a bit of an experiment with a few things and find which option tingles the taste buds and satisfies the blood sugar 🙂

And that's not sweet?
