Hi
Its a big day on Wed I go to see the nurse as she is changing me from 2 injections to 4
So I am glad as I really stuggle with 2,however im a bit worried about counting carbs etc and all the new problems that change will bring
I cycle a lot and always cycle round Holland for 6 days in May, so im concerned with not being sorted for the 21 of May.
I know that it has to be easier as most people are on it, but Im really stuggling with the whole diabetic thing.
I have been taking to much insulin this weekend so I can eat more but its got me all to ****.
As a 50 year old I should know better but we went out last night to eat then pictures it was a nightmare I got it wrong .
I know that its frustrating for everyone but I can get so angry with people who just dismiss the diabetic condition with comments like oh you can use a pen to inject now that cant be too hard, without realising that this thoing stays with you every minutie of everday.
Sorry its a rant now but i use the site to air these things
Any advise would be greatlly welcomed
Stay healthy

Hi Colin
I'm sure your diabetes nurse will be able to help you get ready for cycling in Holland in May. A basal bolus regime (you won't get far googling for "basul bosal") gives you the option to count carbohydrates and vary the dose, but you can start off by having regular doses for fixed carbohydrate meals - but you'll soon realise the advantages of the flexibility of the regime. Presumably you'll know daily kms / miles on your bike holiday and you're familiar with terrain, lack of hills, likely weather, food, times of meals? If so, it will be relatively easy to fit your new regime to your holiday - probably far easier than adjusting on a bimodal / 2 injections regime. You won't be tied to eating at the same times each day, for example. You will need to take 2 pens, one for each type of insulin, plus a spare syringe or two - that way, if one breaks or gets lost, you'll have a spare, although it is a bit fiddly changing cartridges if you have only one functioning pen.
Anyway, please let us know how the cycling goes - if you feel like posting any pictures, Cambridge Cycling Campaign www.camcycle.org.uk/map/ has a good picture map, which often gets new photos of good and bad examples of cycling in other countries - Holland is always praised very highly. I've posted some photos of cycle routes etc in North Tyneside, Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead, but none from South Tyneside.

Hey colin, hows it going?
I thought I would drop a line as you reminded me of when I was intially started on insulin and was distraught about the 2 week carribean all-inclusive-stuff-yourself-silly holiday I had booked with a friend 2 weeks after starting all that malarky. Armed with ten times the amount of equipment I actually really needed and my DSN's email address I felt like a woman on a misson and off I went. I was under strict instructions to email her everyday if I needed to! And believe it or not there was no need. God knows I needed that holiday.

I was just thinking that perhaps your DSN might offer you the same support? She also gave me a holiday checkllist for making sure I had everything and a letter to wave about if I ended up in foreign medical territory. But having her email address sealed the deal for me and gave me great reassurrance (could be great for you as you may need very specific advice doing physical activity).

People say stupid things to me too, I hate it, but above all I keep it with me much longer than I should. Most of the time I sweat it out because I am c**p at putting people straight and telling them how upset it actually makes me feel. My saving grace is I work each of my annoyances off at the gym, perhaps yours will generate more energy for you cycling round holland?! I hope you enjoy your holiday anyway colin and the change on Wednesday is a good one for you. Good luck.
