Hi my basal tends to hold me pretty well during the day. However I take one injection of levemir at 5 ish and my morning readings are always around 8-9. Tried upping the basal however this then does not hold me during the day as too much. Someone at work who is type 1 suggested taking the levemir later at night? Anyone know if this could work or why it would work? Or is this just nonsense?🙂

I suppose taking it at night would mean the dose would have a few hours to get going and also you would have more of it on board than you previously would have......

you are probably best to split the dose though, makes life much more flexible and is one of the main reasons people move on to the insulin......

This is what I dont understand.... why would I have more on board if I took it later by about 4 hours? So confused?

Sorry, when do you take your dose of Levemir?

Hi again. I take it usually at 5 in the evening. It does appear to last all day from what I can see i.e I dont start getting high numbers before I take my next shot of basal:D

Hi Astbury

Do you see a consistent rise from bedtime to morning (often called 'dawn phenomenon').

If so NRBs idea splitting your dose into two smaller ones might help (smaller doses tend to last less time). That way you could tweak your overnight dose to try to target DP, while having less active during the day.

Many people use lev this way. Often starting with half their 'normal' daily dose approx 12 hours apart, then tweaking/adjusting from there.

You may have seen this already, but worth a read if not: http://www.diabetes-support.org.uk/info/?page_id=120

Hiya no actually the other way. It may be an idea to split. I just couldnt work out why taking the levemir later would help at night?!

Maybe NRB thought you were an early riser and took it at 5am (so the prev dose may have run out at/before breakfast)? But taking it the night before would mean it'd be at full strength in the early hours
