Hi all.Has anyone got any experience of a lantus overdose... I have taken basically double of what i usually do.Can this be treated at home or not....?Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Yes it can be managed at home, just continue to monitor your BG and treat as and when needed xx

Don't use any bolus at all and just feed the lantus by grazing all day long. Keep plenty of hypo gear about you and don't go driving anywhere.
If at all worried then make sure a family member can keep an eye on you or ask a friend to give you a ring every couple of hours to make sure you are ok.

Thanks very much for your advice.

We have all done things like that at some time.
Keep a watch and as others have said, don’t drive today.

I found that taking more lantus tends to peak in 2-3 days so may need to take fast acting today. Just keep testing!
I have taken it twice many years ago. A few years ago when I was really tired and distracted I took 47 units of novorapid instead of lantus and had to go to A&E overnight as live alone and wasn’t using cgm. I was low for several days! Because taking insulin is so normal it’s easy to get mixed up or forget if taken it!

Yes expect results to spread over several days and today may not be the day when you see the most difference so test often.

Hi again...If i may ask another question.Im very sensitive to insulin. My normal dose of lantas is only 4 units.I accidentally injected 9.Will the lantas last in my body longer than 24 hours?Although its still a small amount but obviously double of what im used to.Trying to think ahead to my next Lantas injection tomorrow. If to take it.. and how much. Many thanks.

Err, it usually lasts longer than 24 hours anyway! It's supposed to, that's what it does. It does not 'release itself evenly' either. You'll just have to play it by ear sort of tomorrow.

In all honesty, I have no idea how Lantus works so can not give you a def answer. If it were me I would just keep testing and eating/treating as need be. If out of range ie lower than normal at bedtime make sure you have a snack before you go to bed. You would be better off running high for 24 hours than having a bad low.
Hope you are surviving ok

Hi Sue...thanks for your advice...all going not too bad so far.

Hi Amjay,
I wouldn't like to say. For me I do know that 1 extra unit of basal can cause a constant drop in blood sugar (about 4 mmol over 6hrs) for at least 24 hrs. I'm not sure how an 5 extra units would affect blood sugar.
Like everyone has said, monitor and graze as necessary. Keep off high fat/meat foods, until insulin back to normal, to allow any hypo treatment to take effect as quickly as possible.

Also worth mentioning, you can get insulin pen monitoring clip on devices which record when and how much you have taken each day.
