Just been up to Waitrose to get in some supplies and they have Burgen bread at ?1.07 (got 4 loaves for the freezer) and jelly babies BOGOF - 2x215g bags for ?1.48. Should keep me going for a month! 🙂

Anyone else spotted any good buys?

The last couple of times I bought Burgen bread I paid ?1 in Sainsbury's - that was about a month back. If my OH goes shopping he gets whatever brown or wholemeal bread he sees, and he will only eat whit bread.

Glad you got there and back without another supermarket hypo.

My (more) local Co-op doesn't stock Burgen, hence my monthly trip to Waitrose. In the Co-op they only have Warburton's at around ?1.85 and Hovis at around ?1.65, so the Burgen is much cheaper and seems to stay fresher longer.

I half expected a hypo this morning, and it just goes to show how fickle diabetes is! Yesterday I had the same breakfast, same insulin as today, no run or anything and had what must have been a very low 2 in Tescos. Today I went for a longish run at a fair old pace, had a session with Gay Gasper and had a 3 mile walk to Waitrose and back, returning with three bags of heavy shopping. My level? 4.7! 🙄

Hi Alan - I always freeze my burgen and then pop on defrost in micro for 1 minute - still tastes as fresh as coming out of the oven.

I have never shopped in Waitrose as I always thought it was for the very rich - goes back to the days of working with a pompous boss but thats a different story!

My mother in law likes Waitrose. Their prices are around the same as Sainsbury's from what I found. I also think it has that "rich" reputation, although it isn't always reflected in the quality of there own brand food.

Fortunately my local Sainsbury's is over the road from me :D the only problem being that their stock of Burgen seems to vanish quickly.

sainsburys still doing burgen bread ?1 a loaf.

Tesco burgen is ?1 a loaf

I have never frozen bread, and with only hubby and I in the house sometimes I throw out half a loaf...

Do you freeze it whole or put separate slice in freezer bags

If bread is frozen, then can freeze whole loaf and remove a slice or two as you need it. No need to defrost if you're going to toast it anyway, just increase toasting time. If unsliced loaf, then worth slicing into a few chunks or individual slices before putting in freezer, in original packet or separate food / freezer bags.

As a result of occasionally freezing bread, my partner & I virtually never have to dispose of bread, much to the disappointment of our ducks, who have to rely on our lodger for sliced white bread with mouldy bits picked off before tearing for them to eat.

Thanks Copepod think I will start freezing my bread 🙂

I freeze burgen half a loaf at a time. It seems to last for a reasonable time without going hard although it is starting to get dry eventually. Possibly 3rd's might be optimum.

freeze

My other half makes my pack up with the bread still rock hard 2 hrs latter when i eat the sarnies they are fresh and no sign of them being frozen the same go,s for rolls but these are made the night before with frozen rolls🙂

Morrisons and Asda often have Burgen bread on offer at ?1 a loaf, when at this price I stock up and buy 6 or 8 loafs and place in the chest freezer in my garage.

Your all going to hate me but.......................Ben and jerrys half price in Tesco's! :D

*Runs away*

Silly question...what's Burgen Bread!?!

Ben and Jerry's...
Cherry Garcia, here I come!

Burgen do a couple of breads but their Linseed one has around 11g of carbs per slice and is low GI.

Sorry, to disappoint you but they stopped making Cherry Garcia, the swines! It was my favourite too.
