I love bananas. But, it seems to me that they are not that good for me now I have the D . Is this right?

I had one fairly late last night , just fancied one, but my reading was 8.6 just over an hour later. Would this be the cause do you think? or, is it my slight sore throat which seems to be lingering although not giving me any trouble?

Only your meter will tell you. SAome people are fine with them. I tend to avoid them as I find them much harder to gauge (I found size and ripeness made a big difference to the carbs/speed for me)

But don't just go on one test. Try them a few times and see whether the effect seems to be consistent.

Bananas are something I have very infrequently but i have heard they can cause a diabetics levels to go up .The sugar a diabetic tries to avoid is added refined sugar. Fructose is the natural sugar found in fruit and in most cases will only raise the blood glucose level slowly not send it up quickly like added sugar.Just keep an eye on your levels only your meter can tell you

I was told bananas were at huge no-no. Far too much sugar in them they said. I tried it once and my BGs shot up so I haven't done it since. Perhaps I should start carrying one around with me now hypos are a regular occurrence.

Hi AnnW,

my nurse told me to have a banana(1)not three haven't had one since Jan 2010 🙂 she also told me to have puddings if I wanted to😱this is what I find so confusing as bananas are full of sugar.

As already mentioned, unripe bananas are much 'better' than ripe ones (it's a pity that I prefer mine spotty!).

Personally, I'm back to having one with my breakfast every day and have absolutely no problem with them bg-wise.

As others have said, only you will know whether the same will be true for you. But an 8.6 one hour later doesn't sound too bad to me.

Andy 🙂

I'd agree with Andy - 8.6 isn't bad, and a lot will depend on the ripeness - the riper and blacker, the quicker it will convert to glucose in the blood - and the size of course! 🙂 I often eat banana sandwiches and they don't seem to affect me any more than other types of sandwich (after adjusting my insulin dose to cover the carbs, of course).

Ann, I would say you are fine to have bananas every now and then, they contain some very valuable vitamins and minerals. 🙂

I have a banana every day with bran for breakfast. Typically 2 hours later my BS will be between 1 and 2 units lower than pre breakfast.

bananas spike me rotten :( but we are all different and 8.6 is very good (compared to my readings anyway) 🙂

I think we all need a banana sometimes. The riper they are the more likely to cause \ spike I tend to have one with my lunch or dinner as they also have potassium in them which seems to help with various aches and pains.

We are all individuals, so it is a good idea to experiment a bit. I don't like very ripe bananas, and my system seems to cope with the just turned yellow ones.

The thing to aim for is a balanced diet. good luck with it all.

Thanks a lot everyone, most useful info. I suppose the point is really that we are all different.!

I had a wobbly this morning with my husband - moaning that everything I love is bad for me, I had a good rant and bless him he just listened and tried to advise some tasty options, it gets to me sometimes.

I am going to the cinema alone this evening as he doesn't really care for it and has some interaction with his message board this evening so is occupied with that! I am going to take a couple of oatcakes to nibble... hope that will be ok!!

Thanks anyway everyone I shall work on what you suggest
