Hi All,
I've had a pretty bad week Diabetes wise. Those of you who have me as a friend on Facebook will know some of what happened. But with that being more visible to certain people I will give full details here.
On Monday I did a set change for my pump as normal, then went out shopping with a good friend of mine. Whilst out shopping I felt the cannulla start moving so purchased some micropore tape and taped the whole cannulla back in place. All well and good, checking BG not long after it was fine, 2 hours latter still fine so I forgot all about it. First thing Tuesday morning I felt pretty normal before going out to work (got there at 6:30am) but as I got there I suddenly started feeling very sick. Before I'd even signed in I was in the loo throwing up. Thinking it was just a tummy bug I carried on with what I needed to do, but before 7 I was again sick so checked my BG levels, 33.6mmol/l I sent a text to my friend saying that I wasn't well and needed help before going to tell the AM who point blank refused to listen. I had done a 10.9 unit bolus through my pump (not thinking clearly) and started working as the shop opened. Within minutes I needed to be sick again and ran to be sick. In the space of just over an hour I was sick 5 times and started having a panic attack. It took one of our kitchen staff helping me down to the office, almost incapable of breathing and very grey of skin before the AM decided that I really wasn't well and phoned 999 for an ambulance. It also helped that my friend was on the way too. Ambulance arrived at the same time as my friend whose eldest Daughter traveled in the Ambulance with me to Good Hope Hospital, where my Ketone levels were measured 7.0mmol/l
Straight onto an actrapid infusion and Saline/Potassium/Glucose drip and lots of blood tests to check how acidotic I had become. Fortunately my blood pH was not too bad and I was only admitted for 30hrs but it's an experience I don't wish to have again.
I found out on Wednesday that the cause was the cannulla bending when I'd pushed it back in on Monday, it had been letting insulin dribble out, but not enough to stop me going bad, so 13 months of having a pump and I've only had 1 catastrophic failure of a set. I know what to do in future and have been given some small 1ml syringes to keep with my kit as an emergency contingency plan.
The good bit of this all is the fact that I know that my friend really cares about me, I knew it before as we've been going out for a couple of weeks, but Tuesday showed me how much she cares for me. She has made sure that I don't go back to work early (in fact I'm not back at work until the 18th) and I've been spending every day at hers. It's taken me a long time to feel comfortable with anyone (due to having severe depression) and I now have someone who I can feel completely relaxed with, her parents like me too. So for the first time in my life I am in a relationship, and I hope it lasts as she is wonderful.
