Background Retinopathy Bingo!

I have lost count of the various locations I have to go to for my Eye Screening over the last couple of decades.

My next test isn't due till next year, but it's a 30 mile round trip to the nearest large town. Luckily hubby can drive me. Very sunny last year but it was July.

Mine used to be at the local GP surgery which is only 5 minutes walk from home so the worst thing I had to deal with (with sunglasses) was my South facing white front door.
Now it is 30 minutes walk away in an uninviting health centre where you don't register your arrival. You just hope the scanner guy will notice you are waiting. The walk home is a little disconcerting but the other option is to do some shopping in the supermarket next door which could be a little hit and miss at what I pick up.

All went very smoothly, Now just a week or two’s wait for the results 🙂

This year for the first time ever they gave me a choice of where to go so I rang and said which place has the earliest slot and it was a random surgery somewhere in Coventry so I went there. I wouldn't choose there again though cos there was hardly any parking for patients, the bulk of it was firmly for Staff Only. (Er, hang on ....)
Last time mine was at ASDA in Coventry so plenty of parking, very efficient and quick.

To begin with, mine were at (the old) Coventry Hospital, as were my D clinic ones - door marked 'Metabolic Health' where I was always kept waiting at least half an hour and was usually desperate for the loo by the time they saw me, and loo and back took getting on for 10 minutes so you tried not to! Was pleased when they moved to Walsgrave really. But after a couple of 'mobile clinics' in various carparks, since then it's always been at City of C Health Centre ie virtually smack next door to the old hospital!
I have just had a Dermatology appt come and that's at Cheylesmore surgery, upstairs apparently, no need even to report to the surgery reception desk, though the doors and up in the lift/stairs! But, an outfit employing 'qualified dermatologists working with the NHS'.

I have just had my first eye check set up for 23 Dec. They rang me and said they were in the area and did I want an appointment so said yes. I must admit the call was a bit out of the blue and I was tempted to ignore it as a likely scam call so glad I didn't.

The bit about not driving afterwards is a bit of pain as the appointment is about 3.5km away over a very steep hill. Looks like my Monday morning run is going to be a bit harder than normal o_O and then I'll have to run back. Big brekkie for me after the event.

Hope it goes well @JimmyBlue

Sorry to hear about the up-hill run! 😱

@JimmyBlue Good luck! Don't forget sunglasses.

Good luck with your eye test. If your eyesight is still blurry after the appointment can you get a bus part of the way home then walk or run the rest? Just a bit worried you might have a collision if you can't see well. Having said that I recall my vision went back to normal quite quickly although I kept my sunglasses on. Hubby drove the 14 miles back home. I was feeling a bit lazy that day.😎

That sounds like our surgery, 2 doctors surgeries and Boots on the ground floor and various private clinics on the upper floor. Parking a bit limited but usually space over the road or in the ocial club round the corner.

@silver minion There are no buses in the countryside so its drive or walk/run. My wife has offered to pick me up after she picks up the Christmas Turkey but I think the exercise will be better. If my eyes are a bit blurry then I will simply run on the pavements, but if OK then I will probably go through the woods as the hill is not so steep doing that, although bigger chance of my getting lost

Yes I live in the sticks too. Nearest bus stop is about 2 miles away. Hope it all goes well.

It's quite a laugh - husband said PDQ he thought it was right by Ch Club, I said Oh Have we been to that club then? Yes a couple of times, it's where Boyd Carpenter have their Charity Awards presentations. Aaah, right. Nice club.

Only ever been twice, last time approx 2 years ago, in the dark!

For anyone not 'local' to myself and LL, BC now run the amateur football league (for the B C Cup) and any excess income is passed to local charities, so them supporting the Prostate Cancer Support Association (which husband and I are both Trustees of) makes sense. Their management committee like ours, have all aged too.

I got a letter with my first ever appointment in October. It was in December in a supermarket car park. I obviously wouldn't drive to the appointment and it is in the North of a city ten miles from where I live but I live to the South. I p9stponed it till April. I would prefer it at the local hospital but don't know if it is an option. I have anterior uveitis and over the years both my pupils have stuck down. I remember a consultant saying it would be sorted when I needed my cataracts done. I was put forward for an op in March before I knew I was diabetic and in August the consultant said the combo of cataract and stuck down pupils meant she couldn't see back of my eye. I had a flare up of uveitis in May 2023 but it was a Saturday and noone was doing scans and I didn't get a follow up appointment with a consultant. Sadly the cataract op has caused my uveitis to flare again. As I am seeing a retinal consultant I assume I may be able to have the scans done at the hospital

The common name for uveitis is iritis and if I have a flare I self refer. I have foolishly left it on occasions although 12 years ago when I delayed i was shocked to have a macular oedema and have to take steroids.
