Diagnosed in 2017 as prediabetic, lost 4 stone and have been managing to keep my blood sugars at an acceptable level by diet. Until recently. I am now diagnosed with polymyalgia rheumatica and put on steroids and it seems my GP wants to put me on medication for my diabetes. He has given me a monitor and I am to take my readings in next week when he will decide what to do. Anyone else had experience of steroids affecting blood sugars? If and when I can get off the steroids will I be able to stop taking diabetic medication? Feeling a bit despondent really.

Hi @kentish maid Steroids commonly cause high blood sugar (sometimes very high) so, looking on the bright side, it sounds like your GP is aware and ready to help you control your blood sugars if they rise.

Well done on the weight loss - that’s a huge amount you’ve lost so be proud.

Unfortunely that will be difficult to say, there are people who becoming Diabetic following having steriods for other condtions.

Welcome back @kentish maid

But sorry about the changes to your levels and meds that have brought you back to us.

Well done on the changes you made to keep your BGs under control and the weight you’ve lost!

Sorry to hear about the polymyalgia - that must be very draining.

Hope the diabetes meds can keep your BGs in range while your course of steroids does its thing.

Hello @kentish maid

Sorry about your need for steroids, they are very efficient at reducing inflammation but can really push up blood sugar. This information is useful from the Diabetes UK site

Hi @kentish maid good to hear from you again but sorry you have problems.

Doctor seems to be on top of it which is good for you.

Take care stay safe keep us up to date.

Thank you for your replies. Found the link very informative @Flower so thank you. Have also been talking to a friend of a friend who is a retired Diabetic nurse and has suffered from PMR for 4 years so know a bit more about what I am facing. Looks like this is something that will be with me for a while. btw I am keeping a food diary alongside my blood readings so I can work out if anything has adverse affects on my levels.

Have been monitoring my bloods for 6 days now. Average reading on waking is 5.6, 6.1 before meals and 7.7 2 hours after meals. I have been keeping a food diary and worked out what caused a couple of highs after meals so will have to make some tweaks to my diet. Hopefully GP will not feel it is necessary to put me on medication

Those results seem well in range!

Those sound great @kentish maid - whatever changes you’ve made have clearly worked really well!

Well have seen the GP, am to keep monitoring my bloods while I am on the steroids and he doesn't want to see me again for 6 weeks unless I get problems. Feeling more positive now that I know that my diabetes is under control, and I don't need medication.
