I test my levels every day and generally they have stabilised to a safe level ( around 5.5 to 7.5) every day. I naively thought I could have a rare treat so had two lemon tarts over three days. Big mistake - the afternoon reading was 9.0. This was a salutary lesson and a reminder that you need to be vigilant. Thanks for letting me share this.

How long after your lemon tart did you test ? It may not be as bad as you think as the hot weather does seem to be having an effect on people increasing their blood glucose. Don't make a decision on just one test0

Good that you’ve been able to keep an eye on things, and yes an important reminder that occasional treats are perfectly fine, but if they are going to raise BG levels substantially, then it’s probably wise to only enjoy them rarely.

Hope you enjoyed the tarts.

The real nightmare for me is choosing to have a treat, like a piece of particularly-difficult-to-calculate cake or whatever, only to find that it isn’t very nice cake!

I’d much rather have the BG chaos less frequently, and save it for really delicious things… like the spectacularly nice (and carby!) bread pudding my daughter made me foe Father’s Day. Yum!

The tarts were delicious but might stick to low sugar protein bars in future. Surprisingly I seem to be OK with the occasional piece of fruit cake especially on a day when I go to the gym. After exercise my levels are always on the low side. I agree with you about which treat to choose!

Around 5 hours. The hot weather is probably a determining factor at the moment. Thanks for your comments.
I had a similar experience with a pie last week which sent my BG up to 12-13 for about 6 hours.

Rice and potatoes seem fine. Yet to eat pasta since diagnosis, not optimistic!

Pasta or noodles made from black beans or edamame beans are low carb and a good substitute for wheat based pasta, you can get in H & B,

Good luck with the pasta! Not eating between meals seems to be of benefit to me and if I do I will have toast or some grapes or strawberries. Since my diagnosis last November I have stopped snacking on biscuits and ice cream etc.

If you want snacks then nuts, cheese, strawberries or raspberries would be better than toast or grapes as they are high carb or a square of dark chocolate. Protein bars like Nature Valley, KIND or similar are about 12g carb per bar.

Yes, but rest of the family will be eating the cheaper normal pasta and AFAIK you can't make a lasagne where only my bit is low carb. I don't eat pasta often enough to justify buying it (none in last 2 months) but this advice may help others - thanks!

Thanks. I have some low sugar protein bars and usually have one at lunchtime on a day when I am at the gym. After an hour at the gym my b.s. readings are usually quite low.
