Avoiding Hypos at the Gym?

Hi all

I'm in my late 30s and was diagnosed T2 a couple of years ago.

As part of a recent health kick I've joined the gym which surprisingly I've been enjoying. I've been wearing a self funded libre 2 which has been extremely handy as I've had a few instances of near hypos while doing cardio. I've tried to combat this by taking 15g of glucose chews 15 minutes before exercise. This has helped a bit but I still see near hypos occuring.

I'm on 1500g of slow release Metformin. I was on 20mg gliclazide but recently stopped taking that upon advice of the doctor.

Has anyone experienced anything similar? I'd like to work on my cardio a bit more but this is a real blocker.

If you’re not taking the gliclazide then you don’t need to be testing for hypos or treating them with glucose tablets. Your body should handle them.

Hi,

While not on medication, i too use a CGM and had similar experiences. What i do now and has stabilised things is to have a half a protein shake 45 mins before i go to the gym - as in 45 mins until im on the machine of my choice. And the second half post work out - my blood sugar stabilises around 5 - 6 and only ever goes up if i am doing HIT so i need to be wary there. But the lows of 4.2 and trending down have virtually gone.

Welcome @T2PUSB 🙂 It’s usually only people on insulin and other glucose-lowering drugs that need to worry about hypos. In others and people who don’t have diabetes, the body will deal with lower sugars itself.

What numbers were you seeing on the Libre that concerned you?

Hi @T2PUSB, I’m wondering what your last Hba1c was, are you finger prick testing on the Libra telling you your low sugars and approaching hypo ?
