Hi all,

Alex (14) is eating more as he is growing and his legs seem to have become hollow!😱 On average he now eats between 150 to 200 carbs a day - if he has a pizza (not often) it can be 250 carbs for the day. I am just wondering what your average carb intake is.🙂Bev

These days I'm probably around 140-180g per day. I did eat more before diagnosis because I used to graze a lot on carby snacks, but now my snacks tend to be low or no-carb.

When I was Alex's age I could happily eat a horse between two bread vans and still have room for a couple of catering sized treacle puddings - and I was skinny as a rake until I turned 30. School dinners used to come on trays to feed 8 boys at a table and I could eat a whole trayful. Must have burned it off somehow, couldn't do it now! 😱

Between 120 and 180g. Definitely have better control if I keep each meal under 50g

All teenage boys have completely hollow everything. Voracious.

I have never ever seen anyone eat as much as our grandson has been for years. OK he's now 16 and well over 6 ft so he had to fuel that growth. From age about 11 he'd go voracious, get a bit plump and then shoot up another 2 inches and that repeated and repeated itself. But his shorter mates are all exactly the same. I dunno where it goes. Not on body fat for any of em and that's a fact.

He's stopped doing it occasionally though, now it's constant. God knows how much he costs to feed.

I don't think you can compare his intake to anyone else unless they are (at least!) the same sex or age.

At Alex's age I ate about 250 a day and right through to a couple years ago due to my activity levels which included x country and hockey at county level. Plus weekend jobs whilst at school milking cows and horse riding.
Once I left school it was full time work on the farm plus all the horses.
Last few years though as have ME I don't exercise very much so only eat 80 - 120 perday.

As long as Alex is growing well and not overweight then he is fine 🙂

I would also add that a lot of people find that they need more bolus for a higher carb intake i.e. ratios change and you find yourself needing more insulin per 10g than you would for a moderate carb meal.

I only eat about 100g a day most dys I feel too full if I eat more than that. Also, like Sue, I don't do much exercise because of my ME.

I eat about 80-100g a day and I'm an active 24yr old

At alexs age right through till 23 / 24 I was eating around 250 - 300 g per day easily. I can rememeber eating up to 8 slices of toast for breakfast somedays and it not even touching the sides. (The model diabetic teenager me... hmm :/ ) But I have gradually reduced and now try and eat between 100 - 150 with no more than 60 g max in a meal, say 50 - 60g for dinner then 20 - 30 g for breakfast, and 30 - 50g lunch.

I find my diabetes much more managable now Ive cut down a tad. Dont get me wrong I still have the odd blow out requiring a good healthy dose of rapid acting. But I think gone are the days of 24 units rapid acting (Based on a 10 to 1 ratio) for a friday night chinese :/ !!

Hehe! I could have written that myself!

I have between about 140g - 170g a day.

Depends. Usually less than 50g a day, although some days I just decide I'm going to be fat and inject more, putting it up anywhere between 50-200g.
