At risk of diabetes
Hi all,
I am at high risk of diabetes. I’ve gained a lot of weight over the last 6 years. I have fibromyalgia and I am in constant pain. This means I do little exercise anymore and comfort eat to manage the pain to work etc. I’ve tried diets and things like slimming world but always go back to the comfort eating. Any advice or tips would be appreciated.

At risk of Diabetes means an HbA1C of less than 48 mmol so a small reduction in the amount of carbohydrates you eat should be all you need so far as Diabetes is concerned.
Popular low carb foods are: meat, fish. hard cheese, full fat dairy, eggs. above ground veg especially cauliflower and broccoli.
Foods to avoid/cut down on include grains/pastry/pasta, tropical fruit, fruit juices as well as the obvious food/drink with added sugar.

Hello @Fibrogirl ,

Thank you so much for joining our online community forum. I am so sorry to hear that you are in constant pain and I can only imagine how difficult that must be for you. It may be helpful to right down what things you eat in a day and how you might improve it. It also may be helpful to speak to your GP and they may have some additional tips to help break the cycle of comfort eating. Also, do you love cooking? we have some threads for some healthy recipes you could try. Link below:

Hi and welcome. Chronic illness often brings friends and makes it hard to do things like exercise so I have huge sympathies. Can you go back to your GP or rheumatologist and have a review of your fibro meds? I’m not pain free but tweaks like taking regular paracetamol alongside my gabapentin and naproxen has helped a lot. I can’t do anything exercise wise but do try to walk when I can as it’s slow and gentle.

You’ve already had suggestions about low carb alternatives. It’s worth trying them. One of the things with fibro can be lacking the energy or ability to cook so try to plan food you can grab. That’s where cold meats, hard boiled eggs etc can come in handy.
