For the first time ever, I plucked up courage to ask for the carb count in a dish I wanted to order.
We were staying in a well known hotel chain, (with the purple theme, and advertised by Lenny Henry). The first night, I had grilled salmon, veg, and new potatoes, easy to work out, and no point in finding out the official carb count because I knew I wouldn't eat all the potatoes anyway. But the next night I fancied the veggie lasagne, and it's impossible to eyeball that, because everything is smothered under the cheese on top. I looked up their menu on line, in the hope that the info was there, but it said 'ask your waiter for any nutritional information'. So I did!
When he'd turned pale and muttered 'nobody's ever asked me that before' he rallied, and disappeared off saying 'I think there's a book' Anyway, he came back with a large folder, having already looked up the info, saying 41.8, but would you like to check it for yourself for your peace of mind, and showed me the page. Full marks, he did it with grace and humour. ( when he came round to check we were enjoying our meal, he said 'and how is your 41.8 carbs?). He got a large tip, and set the benchmark for if I ever need to ask again.
(I still think it would be easier if they put it on line, but that wasn't his fault!)
