Hello, I would like some advice please to help my partner recently diagnosed with type 2. He has just one cup of coffee each morning and switched from sugar to sweetners to help his blood sugar (he has tablets rather than insulin injections). His blood sugar is higher in the mornings and lowers during the day. I have read articles in the internet but there is conflicting information as to whether sweetners raise blood sugar or not (he cannot do without). Can anyone clarify please? Thanks

My glucose is high in the morning until I eat - but I only have 10 gm of carbs, then the rest of my carbs in the evening as I get lower results that way. I am more resistant to carbs in the morning. Some people are the other way round - I suspect they are the ones who can eat porridge for breakfast.
As long as the levels are not really high, as your partner manages blood glucose levels and gets further from diagnosis, things should even out.

Pre diagnosis, I always said that I would rather not drink coffee than drink it without sugar. I have gone through phases of having sweeteners in it, which is OK but the taste isn't great.
Since diagnosis and following a low carb, higher fat way of eating, I have double cream in my morning coffee instead of sugar or sweeteners and it tastes amazing and is one of my little luxuries of my day and I wouldn't go back to having it sweetened now.
I don't think there is anything wrong with using artificial sweetener and I certainly do occasionally in other things, so one cup of coffee each day with sweetener would not be a problem and will not raise BG levels although the caffeine in the coffee can increase levels for some people but I would encourage him to try it with cream instead. For me it was necessary to deal with my sweet tooth after my diagnosis, so I cut everything sweet right back and now I have a much greater appreciation for a tiny amount of sweetness and I now really enjoy both sour and bitter flavours in my food as well as savoury a lot more.... it is almost like I now eat in colour when with sugar in my diet I was just eating in black and white. Not sure if that makes sense, but everything tastes better since I dealt with my sweet tooth.

Tastes are funny things as I could never bear tea with sugar, I could even tell if it had been stirred with a sugary spoon, but with coffee I used to have a bit of sugar but then gave that up. Somehow if I had cream in the coffee it would always seem to need sugar especially if it had a slug of something alcoholic in it.
Our daily treat is a Dolce Gusto coffee usually Flat White or Cafe au Lait.

I stopped having ing sugar about 40 years ago, I don't use sweetner.Though some products I don't eat as I don't like the after taste they leave. Main one being Sugar Free Jelly.

One mug of coffee is my treat of the day so I will try double cream so I can give up the sweeteners as I do think they are bad for you. What coffee do you have @rebrascora? Real coffee? I dunno how to do that.

Actually Jan, I buy the "Beanies" flavoured instant coffee (not being a coffee snob... err.. officianado 🙄) Currently using a caramel one. I just get them in Lidl but I am sure Nescafe will be fine if that is what you drink. I do put a little splash of blue top milk in my mug with the coffee and then the hot water, give it a stir and then the cream.... Yum!

I think it’s unlikely to be the sweetener @Gisma

It’s more likely to be the natural circadian rhythms, and Dawn Phenomenon where the liver ‘fires up the burners’ for the day by releasing stored glucose, which is less helpful if your metabolism has gone a bit wonky!
