What diabetics with no particular extra complications are being asked to practise is 'social distancing' not isolation, and you can still go to work. If you have other more severe health problems and need to isolate, you will receive a letter from the NHS by this weekend, (but this is mainly for transplant, or cancer patients, and things like that) See here for the government guidelines and an explanation of them.

I work in a supermarket with many customers at close cintact and handling everything plus cash. I am not happy that in my job my risks are high in contracting coronavirus. It says diabetics are high risk and in the list of those refraining from work for 12 weeks. Any advice please .

Hi thank you but i cannot socially distance myself as i work at a till at work. I have several co workers moving near me as they work behind the tills with me as we serve customers standing a short distance from us. I have had chest infections in the past also and am 59 years old. I know i would not survive this if i got it.

I work in a supermarket and we are waiting to here from head office about what we should be doing.

Social distancing means no “unnecessary” contact with people, e.g. no more partying with your friends at the weekend and if you can work from home then do. However if you work in a job which is impossible to do from home then you should still go to work. “Isolation” means doing your utmost to cut yourself off from people altogether. “Social distancing” means you can still mix with other people when you have to but you should try to avoid it otherwise.

I was served by a assistant in my local Pharmacy was wearing gloves the other day.

I really do not understand this. I may be wrong, but gloves do not prevent transmission of the virus unless the assistant takes off the gloves after serving each customer and puts on a new pair. Probably washing or applying hand sanitiser in between. This assistant is probably not doing that and is also probably rubbing her mouth, nose and eyes with her gloved hands!

I suspect it gives a false sense of security and may even be harmful as a result.

I am happy to receive any corrections though. 🙂

No she was not but I have noticed dental assistants who don't change gloves either. I also wonder if thes gloves are not latex free how many more people will develop latex allergies.

I’m in the same boat really! Also we can’t exactly work from home either! I’ve sent my SN an email asking whether or not I should be going into work or staying away comp,Evelyn!
Then begs the question, how long do I have to do this for?
Hope you can find some answers soon!

I've been told in no uncertain terms to stay away for 12 weeks. I'm lucky in that I can remote work, and all face-to-face meetings have been moved to an online platform to accomodate me. I'm very lucky.

I was told by my work that I have to isolate from Saturday due to diabetes and heart disease even though I am fitter than I have been in years. I think the GP surgeries have been told something that the public haven’t else why would they have insisted it was Saturday (I don’t work Thursday or Friday so not that).

I am going to self isolate for 12 weeks. I care more for my health than going to work and possibly getting it then dying from it. We have to do the right thing .

Sorry to see you are anxious about this Lee. Your chances of having a severe case may be significantly higher than the general population, but try to remain calm, there’s still a much greater chance that you would only have a mild illness.

Social distancing is still the official advice for people in your situation, it I can completely understand why you think your work and history of chest infection puts you at higher risk.

So it is wise to take precautions, but its also important to try to reduce your worry, and to look after your mental health.

You might find this PDF about reducing worry and separating the risk factors you can change from the ones you can’t helpful:

I'm not self isolating for 12 weeks unless specifically told to do so. But I am being sensible and social distancing as much as possible. Work are being good and I can spend time in the office doing health and safety stuff rather than being on the shop floor all day. I'm avoiding crowded places as much as possible. We're shopping local instead of going to big supermarkets. We shall see how it goes.
