Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
I am a type 1 and have not received a consultant appointment in the last 7 years.
What can I do? as my GP is useless and despite complaining and attending the DAPHNE course I'm still waiting.

Then write a formal letter to your GP requesting a referral to a hospital diabetes clinic.

Hi. You are entitled to have at least an annual diabetes review with someone. I think you need to insist that either the surgery does it or they refer you to the diabetes clinic. I see the DN at my surgery who is not a super expert but does handle those on insulin quite well and who don't have any real problems.

Hi Celtictigress. When/have you been referred to the hospital? Have you always been under the GP for your diabetes?

OMG Celtictigress...sorry...so difficult to hear you've been waiting so long...as Sue...grovesy and Dave have said get onto your surgery immediately...unacceptable to have waited so long...again as advised put it in writing...needs to be formally addressed ASAP.

How were you first diagnosed, Celtictigress? How did you first learn how to inject insulin, how to test your blood glucose, and how to treat hypos? I assume you must have had medical advice on those, certainly at the onset. And if you were first treated in hospital, did you not see a consultant then? Someone at the surgery (I Assume) must have referred you to the DAFNE course. What has been your ongoing care?

Sorry to ask so many questions, but it does seem a rather unusual situation.

Hi and welcome celtic so sorry you have been just left like this to deal with your diabetes

Update - After my own investigation I have discovered I was discharged over 18 months ago.
I have only ever missed one appointment in 20 years and been seeing DSN as and when needed.
I am a nurse and yesterday was at a study day being told how our area has the worst this and that in regards to diabetes. Well is it any wonder.
Have logged a complaint with Pals. and being referred by my GP. I'm fortunate to have good knowledge of diabetes but I'm not an expert.
What becomes of those diabetic patients who are discharged and are never seen again?. They probably end up in hospital with major complications.
