Are they not offering you a phone consultation?

Nope, nothing, phoned them and i got told, my Doctor will be in touch when the emergency passed, more worried about now being high risk as my wife works in a food shop, i've been on a low card diet and lost a lot of weight and my BP is coming down 117/82

Hi @Biffothebear - Sorry to hear you are having troubles like this - lets see if we can help you with some DIY guidance to put your mind at easy and help you on the right track over this condition - firstly can you let us know your last HB1Ac reading (& when was it). Are you currently taking meds? and how do you manage your risk of diabetes, with diet/exercise? and lastly do you self monitor with a glucose meter at home. How are you finding things.

Sometimes, if willing, its useful to attach this info to your profile (so do dont have to keep repeating stats to people who miss a posting. Just go to your profile page, look for 'signature' and place info there. save.

Thanks, no meds, doing dieting and exercise, HbA1c is 48 that was February 2020

What's your BG doing Biffo? Have you accessed a blood glucose meter yourself, cos I really think at the moment you'd be well advised to do so. There's a particular one which a lot of T2s on the forum use and find reliable, for which the strips are very reasonably priced - at around £8 for 50, whereas an awful lot of meter companies strips are two or three times more expensive when bought over the counter.

Please can someone post a link to the Gluco Navii one?

Your BP is great and it's good you are losing weight, and I honestly don't believe that otherwise healthy people with diabetes are more 'at risk' than anyone else. T2 isn't an auto immune condition; however raging uncontrolled far too high BG lowers the body's resistance to 'bugs' - but you've already taken steps and will continue them to try and control your BG - so monitoring it yourself is even more important just now.

Hi again @Biffothebear bear - Your level show you are just into the range of diabetes. I would say, with a HB1Ac level like that, there's no immediate panic. I saw from your initial post you were given Maggie Davys letter to read along with other links (Found at the top of Newbies section). Just make your way through those, cherry-pick whats relevant to you and make your adjustments.

It seems to be that you have adopted things already (with low carb/exercise) that would yield good results. I wouldnt worry too much at this stage. In fact I am similar to you (ive seen no-one, no DN, no courses, no real diagnosis) and have been like this since last April but have made good and steady progress by myself since then. (Had a little glitch over Xmas - ooops! 🙄)...But got back on track with extra vigour and I know how effective good diet and getting moving more, can help lower levels quite quickly. As long as you keep going that route you will be ok, im sure. But yes, monitoring yourself at home as @trophywench suggests, is vital, to learn about what foods do and dont suit your body. Its the way to go.

You will get out of diabetes only what you put into it. Tame the beast! All the best.

Does your surgery have a Diabetic Nurse, maybe you could get some sort of appointment with her. When my surgery was down to 1 from 2 , she was doing some of the appointments by phone.

I would say that with your HbA1c of 48 and eating low carb, you are pretty low risk (although technically classed as vulnerable due to the diabetes diagnosis) provided you keep your BG levels in range, which is where self monitoring comes in. Personally I don't think you would have gained anything much from seeing the doc or nurse anyway and attending the surgery is not without risk, so nothing lost in my opinion.
You are doing everything correct in managing your diabetes well and that is all that any of us can do to limit any risk. You have to balance what is reasonably achievable with any potential risk. I would therefore probably not mix with groups of people in confined spaces like going to the pub or the gym but continue to live in normal contact with your family, providing that they are also not mixing in closely confined spaces with groups of people. Your wife working in a food shop would not be what I would consider high risk providing she is washing her hands regularly and the shop is not crammed with panic buyers.

An HbA1c of 48 is actually only just the level to be diagnosed as diabetic. Unless you have any problems that you can spot, then, as a T2, there's no rush. Obviously it would have been better to get to see someone. It's unlikely several weeks will make much difference to you D.

There's "educational" sessions for diabtics. Different ones in different area. Desmon, Xpert (specifically for diabetics, nothing to do with Expert Patient Program (EPP)), or a local provison. Also ask about a 'Carbohydrate awarness' session and "supermarket tour" (one I did didn't go anyhwere near a supermarket, it was looking a labels). And possibly a diabetic dietiecan.
You'd have to wait to do any of these normally. You might as well get your name down for when things get back to "normal".

I figured all routine checks would be cancelled this year or until further notice, I am due my respiratory and diabetes checks next month. That's all out the window now.

Just keep an eye on your blood glucose levels and watch what you are eating.

Nothing else for it but to try and stay as healthy as possible while in isolation - trouble is I got some naughties in just because I will have to mostly self isolate with the odd walk out keeping 2 metre distance from folk. Lord knows when the panic buying will stop and we can all get deliveries ok.

Take good care everyone.

48 is really nothing to worry about, prediabetic, just keep doing what you are with diet and exercise and you will be fine.

Click on the link below (If you have diabetes, an ideal HbA1c level is 48mmol/mol (6.5%) or below. )

You are already doing all you need to do so just carry on and do get a meter. The low-carb diet will help. If you need more than that to control your BS then the GP may prescribe Metformin. This tablet doesn't help a lot but it's commonly prescribed and very safe. At the moment I wouldn't worry about seeing a dietician or any diabetes course unless the BS goes up. Personally I wouldn't see a dietician anyway as so many proffer outdated advice - sad but true.

Sorry to hear your appointment was cancelled @Biffothebear

But I think it’s just a sensible precaution... rather than you
suddenly being at much more risk of severe Covid 19 case because you have a tick in a box this week that you didn’t last week.

Just be a little more careful with ‘social distancing’ and keep washing those hands 🙂
