Does the change in weather affect everyone elses appetitie?

Or it might be we have a new caterers at work. The sandwiches are invariably on white bread and mainly meat which is not properly cooked at best. There are lots of cakes with butter cream icing all over them and hardly any fruit.

I'm not sure if it is the food on offer at work or the metformin that has spoiled my appetite. And if I don't eat enough or properly when I take the pills, in an hour or two my tummy is off again.

I start work at 7am, so leave home around 5.30-5.45. If I make sandwiches or a packed lunch, it needs to be done the evening before and by the time I get to mid day I don't fancy it. Because of the way the building is constructed there is no where to keep stuff cool or reheat it (things like home made soup and whole meal bread make a great lunch).

If I go out for lunch we have Burger King, Macdonalds and Pizza Express close to work, but it can work out expensive finding the healthy option every day as well as time consuming.

Anyone else got any thoughts? I'm thinking of buying out the catering company and putting better cooked healthier food back on the menu!

hi caroline yes a side effect of the metformin is loss of appetite theres days when im fine others when i just dont want to eat or when i do the taste in my mouth is so horrible it takes the flavour out of all the good food, it especially can get nasty when im drinking water all the time the after taste is disgusting and im always chewing wrigleys gum lol.
the heat also puts me off cooking if im honest i cant be bothered to stand over the cooker getting all hot and bothered sometimes i just eat a sarny or i might even be lazy and have the odd takeaway.

How many other people work with you, Caroline? Any hope of clubbing together and getting a cheap microwave or mini-fridge?

If food is provided for you then you should definitely get onto your employer or the caterers. They should provide healthy options. This will increase your productivity, whereas the junk food which they currently provide will make you groggy and sleepy in the afternoon, so there is something in it for your employer.

Could you bring a small cool bag with your packed lunch in?

Hi, i have got a great flask, it is for soup and has a spoon in the lid, there are lots of these sorts now, you heat the food in them in the morning and it stays hot all day.

I find that i cant be bothered cooking when it is hot weather and as i don't eat salad this is a problem!

try wraps or couscous salads or stuffed peppers etc. Varity is the spice of life!

Hi Caroline , I have found that since I have changed my diet [ im now low carb] I have hardly any appetite , I do love food but I am never hungry , I consequently only eat once a day ,an evening meal , of usually a type of salad or steak , or omlette. I have noticed that since I have reduced my Insulin intake I am not as hungry , hence I am no longer feeding my Insulin which I know a lot of us have done or are doing .

Hi Caroline

A mini cool bag has already been said - I have one that takes one of those blue things you keep in the freezer as well as 2 small lunchboxes. I buy bags of salad for ?1 in Morrisons and they also do tiny tins of tuna. I make up some couscous the night before and put it all together in the morning - takes less than 10 mins and the couscous and salad last 2-3 days in the fridge. I also take some chopped up melon, kiwis and blueberries and put that in a separate plastic container - that and a fork and spoon and I'm done. We have a cafe too but its not cheap and the salad bar gets overtaken with mayo so I hardly use that. Sometimes instead of couscous I'll take a wrap instead - my cool bag stays on my desk until I'm ready to eat.

Thanks for all the helpfull replies, I have plenty to think about. We have now started having our evening meal in the garden which is helping.

We tried getting a mini fridge for the office and a microwave, but were told we were not allowed to. We are all trying to work things out to boycott the staff resteraunt till we get a more varied menu with a lot more healthier options on it. I have a packed lunch and a small breakfast to see how I go today.

Thanks for everyones help. I think everyone is starting to boycott the staff resteraunt because we can't get what we want.

Our building is designed so that everyone eats in the staff resteraunt, or goes out or has salad or sandwiches from home, not facilities to heat our own or even keep stuff cool.

The new caterers are known for their bakery products, so there are a lot of cakes and biscuits. While the bread is nice it is invariably white and thick slices. The fillings leave a lot to be desired too!

I have my own salad and some fruit with me for today, so will see how I get on.
