Does anyone struggle with appetite loss? It’s been almost 3 weeks and I just don’t feel hungry at all. This is something that happens quite often and can last for months. I’m type 2 only on lantus twice a day but have not taken some doses as I’m eating very little and levels are in normal range. I am underweight 6 and a half stone. Drs tell me to eat small portions and eat whatever I want but i don’t want anything just trying to force myself to eat yogurts. I don’t even want my favourite takeaways so that’s when I know it’s totally gone.

Has anyone tried tablets to increase appetite? I’m thinking of maybe asking the dr.

TBF you need to make yourself eat, even if it’s only small amounts @Kaz84 Once you get into the habit of not eating, it can be bad. Choose concentrated foods with not too much bulk for the calories. Choose things you fancy during the day to keep your appetite up, eg flapjacks, brownie bars, crisps, chunks of cheese, a glass of cold full fat milk, etc. Baked potato mashed with butter and cheese is simple to eat and can be seasoned as you choose with ketchup, sauces, pickle, chilli sauce or whatever.

Sometimes vitamin and mineral deficiencies can contribute, especially zinc deficiency, so you might also want to look for a multivitamin and mineral with those in.

Yes I’m trying to make myself eat, it’s just stressful when you don’t feel hungry or want anything.

Of course, it is {{hugs}} I know it’s not as easy as I might have made it sound. When I’m by myself, I like to sit down and watch a TV programme or an episode of something while I eat. It helps me relax and pace myself. Would that help you take your mind off the eating? Just watch, relax and eat?

If you drink alcohol, a small aperitif and/or a glass of wine can help too.

Treat yourself to something nice - posh protein, a posh ready to cook meal, a chocolate mousse, and maybe they’ll improve your appetite. Fresh air can help too.

Long term you need to eat because, apart from the weight loss, you can mess with your digestive system if you don’t. An older relative hardly ate when younger and has paid the price for that with ongoing gastro issues.

I am managing 1 meal a day in the evening. But at work I’m literally eating 2 frube yogurts. The other day I had a small rice pudding. I’m thinking maybe soup in a hot cup so I can sip it through the day. My frustration is I want to be hungry but I’m just not.
I have just got over a bad cough and been a little stressed lately so I think part of it is that. I always feel tired all the time too so I want to eat for energy.

Could you swap one Frube for a flapjack with a milky drink? Soup is good as long as it’s ‘fortified’ - ie extra calories added in the form of cream, butter, etc.

Low zinc can also cause tiredness as well as poor appetite, so zinc supplements should help.
