Appendix - lack of typical symptoms

Hi everyone,
I recently had my appendix out. It was really difficult to diagnose as I didn't display all the normal symptoms eg. fever and vomiting, and whilst I did have pain in the lower right hand side of the abdomen, it wasn't 'severe enough' to be appendicitis. 🙄
I finally got admitted to hospital basically because I had ketones and was really dehydrated, but even the doctors there said on numerous occasions that it was an 'unconvincing' case for appendicitis. However my blood tests did show a hight white blood cell count - ie that there was some sort of infection going on.
When I was finally examined by the surgeons they still weren't convinced of apendicitis, but decided to do a laparoscopy to investigate. 'If it's inflamed, we'll take it out,' they said. Flash-forward a few hours and I'm waking up from surgery to be told that the appendix had been severely inflamed and stuck to my bowel. Fortunately they were able to remove it without having to remove any of the bowel.
Anyway, I later remembered my GP telling me that people with diabetes sometimes present with less severe symptoms with appendicitis. It certainly seems that that was the case with me. According to my surgeon it was the biggest (ie worst inflamed) appendix he'd ever removed (not that I'm bragging):D and it just strikes me as odd that I wasn't in more pain! I mean, I was in a lot of discomfort, but not agony.

I'm just curious to see if anyone else had a similar experience with not having typical symptoms for appendicitis? And also wanted to generally remind people to be suspicious of pain in the lower right-hand abdomen and to insist on being examined thoroughly!

Very sorry to hear about this, but glad it was sorted successfully! Is it possible it could be due to a form of neuropathy?

Hi Northerner!
I don't think it could have anything to do with neuropathy - I've only had T1 for 4 years and always had good control, with no loss of sensitivity in the feet etc.

I did ask the surgeons why I hadn't been in more pain, and they suggested that my body had tried to protect itself by containing the infected appendix within an abscess. But to me this doesn't help to explain the lack of fever etc.

I'm seeing my GP later today so I will see if they have any further leads!

I see - we're diabetes twins then, as I have had it for 4 years nearly with good control, and I would have expected just what you did. How strange  I will certainly look out for any of the symptoms you felt!

I think the unfortunate coincidence was that I had just (the day before I went to hospital) returned from a trip to India, and had had an upset stomach for about a week. I thought, and so did the doctors, that it was just a case of 'Delhi belly'. Obviously this turned out to be a rather unfortunate red herring! Had I not been in India I would have been far more suspicious of the symptoms. I would say that I'll know better next time, but thankfully you only have one appendix!

Your post is very interesting to me as I have had a very similar experience to yourself, just thought it was me being a bit odd :D.

A few years ago I had a vague pain in my right side that niggled most of the time but didn't cause me enough pain to stop what I was doing etc. I did have a slightly raised temp when I visited my gp but other than that was ok. I was sent to hospital on several occasions over several months, and each time they didn't have a clue and ruled out appendicitis due to lack of symptoms and no reaction during the "finger test" up my bottom. 😱 Eventually, having seen me too many times, the consultant decided to do a laparoscopy to check things out and when I came around from the anaesthetic I was told the same as you, that my appendix had been seriously inflamed and stuck to my bowel.

How strange! Good that we both had the appendix out before it caused any more trouble though! 🙂

Poor you Newbs! How horrible have that go on for such a long time, and how fortunate that they finally discovered the cause.
I never got the "finger test", thankfully! But they decided to do the laparoscopy to investigate. It was a typical case of unlucky timing, as I had had the nerve to get ill at the weekend, so most of their normal diagnostic tests (ultrasounds, MRI etc, were unavailable). and they didn't really have a choice but to investigate.
I asked my GP about this again this morning, and she just said that sometimes people with diabetes don't present with typical symptoms for some illnesses. Although she didn't really explain why and we had totally run out of time so I had to leave. Have been asking Dr Google just now but getting nowhere fast...!

Hi there, please can I ask were your white bloods coming back clear?

Agh, stuck to your bowel. The thought of that makes me feel limp. :(

Glad you got it sorted then.
