Just wondering if anyone has tried making cocoa or hot chocolate with a milk alternative as I was thinking of giving it a go as I miss the creaminess of using milk and although I am willing to add it to a meal and inject for it I was just thinking of this as an alternative so if anyone has tried it please let me know, thanks 🙂 x

I know someone who is lactose intolerant, so doesn't drink milk, but she can tolerate cream. She uses diluted double cream for her hot chocolate and, as I understand it, the impact is negligible. She is T2, so I couldn't comment on any insulin related issues.

I haven't tried drinks, but Daughter avoids dairy because it makes her eczema worse, so when we were on hol, and self catering, I made porridge with almond milk for both of us, (because it was easier) and actually found a) I quite liked it and b) it didn't spike my blood sugars as much as porridge made with cows' milk.

There is very little carbs in double cream so I wouldn't need to inject for double cream, I quite often use it in my coffee x

Well I was having a look on the Tesco website and there are little or no carbs in it but I've never tried it before x

I' had porridge made with unsweetened almond milk and it is good.

I sometimes make cocoa with unsweetened soya milk. Very little if any effect on my blood sugar. I find soya milk has more body than semi skimmed which makes the cocoa satisfyingly thick. I haven't tried adding cream but will next time!

Cheers Radders so glad someone's actually tried it and let me know haha, that will be put on my shopping list now, thanks again 🙂 x

Soya milk seems to be quite a bit cheaper than other substitutes as well so I hope you like it!

Hot chocolate made with coconut milk (the stuff in cartons, not the tinned milk you use in thai cooking) is delicious. A slight taste of coconut which goes nicely with the choc 🙂

Cow's milk isn't exactly full of carbs. Regardless of the type of milk, it's all about 4-5g per 100ml. A hot chocolate will probably have around 200ml of milk in it so 8-10g - for quite a few people, that might actually not be worth bolusing for. Full fat milk proportionally has slightly less carb in it than skimmed, but only by like 0.5g.

It's not the milk that's the challenge in hot chocolate, it's the sugar in the powder! I'm not sure then why you're avoiding milk (unless you're lactose intolerant).

Thanks but it has more carbs than unsweetened soya and almond milk so I may as well just use ordinary milk x

I'm not avoiding milk at all I use it in my coffee everyday, and it's cadbury highlights or options I drink so not exactly full of sugar x

Ah sorry Kaylz, I am very new to all this and havent checked the carbs on everything yet. That'll be my next job 🙂

No need to apologise, when I started carb counting I spent ages on supermarket websites looking at the nutrition and writing some of them down so I knew when I went into the shop I could just grab it rather than have to examine the product while there as I've had some funny looks in small shops for doing that lol 🙂 x

Fair enough....so why are you looking for a 'milk alternative' if you miss the creaminess of milk? Why not just use milk?

It was just as a lower carb alternative if I fancied a lower carb day etc x

I always thought that carbs in liquid form were much more quickly absorbed than other carbs. I've avoided drinking milk (apart from in tea) consequently. 200ml is a fairly small mug - my mugs are all bigger than that!

How about making your hot chocolate by grating dark chocolate into the milk, thus reducing your sugar intake? And a splash or rum or brandy........

What the heck do they call that drink in Spain - cold chocolate milkshake that comes in small bottles, poured over a good old freehand measure of Cent y Tres ? Ab Fab - but not tried it ever since 1972 as I bet the milkshake is full of azucar! (Oh you've started me now - thick breakfast choc with delicious vanilla sugar-coated churros to dip in it .....)
