We as a family would like to go to South Africa Safari holiday, I must admit I'm rather concerned about C's diabetes, being isolated away from hospital or emergency treatment. So I wonder if anyone been and any advice?

the holiday sounds exciting, I hope someone with advice and help is along soon for you.

H went to south africa with the school - but that was pre diabetes so have no idea about health care there -he did have a good time though

I've been twice, can't recommend it enough. We went to a game reserve on the Eastern Cape and another in Madikwe in the north because they were both malaria free which meant we didn't need anti malarial drugs (I was on other drugs at the time and was keen to avoid taking more).

You aren't actually that far away from civilisation - if you needed it most of them can fly you out within hours. From memory, Madikwe is about a 4 hour drive from Johannesburg, but only an hour or so by plane, and they have small aircraft flying in and out daily. And there are smaller towns much closer.

Just make sure you're prepared - I never travel without plenty of spares, split between me and the husband, including lots of Glucogel and Glucagon so we can cope with even major hypos by ourselves.

Make sure you can be flexible with meal times etc - safaris tend to start very early in the morning with a quick snack before you go out and then brunch about 11am ish when you return from the morning game drive. Then afternoon tea before the evening game drive and dinner when you get back after dark. As long as you're comfortable being flexible, it's fine.

I'd say go for it, it's the most amazing experience. Our biggest problem was the food, it was amazing and because safari is generally full board there was an awful lot of it. Self discipline went out of the window!

Mine was more than 30 years ago and pre-D too. Went to the Masai Mara and it was utterly amazing. I would love to go again... if I ever win the lottery!

Best advice I can give you is to discuss it with the travel agent and your doctor to find out what you would need to do and to take with you. I really hope you get to go, it would be the trip of a lifetime.

Thank you Alisons 🙂 I will need to do more researching into it, find out where is the best place close to health care. Thank you for the advice re food, not only for C but myself too as coeliac!! I forgot about myself 😛

To be honest Ruth, we had nothing but wonderful food in South Africa - lots of beautiful fresh meat, fish and veg/salads on all menus, along with really interestingly flavoured foods. Wonderful stuff. The problem was not eating too much of it! That and the homemade cakes every afternoon on the game reserve were a killer! You won't be short of choice for very D friendly food.
