I work front line with vulnerable adults.
The advice offered from Gov.uk and NHS 111 regarding self isolation and diabetes is confusing.
It would appear that diabetics are not included within the list of those who will be contacted by the NHS next week.
Is this the case or not based on current information shared?

Having looked at both sets of advice, the both seem to follow the same line, not including diabetes in the list of severe conditions, just in the 'strongly advised to reduce social contact' list

I'm aware of what the websites are currently saying.
Perhaps I'm supposed to self isolate before I go to work and when I finish !!!
I'll discuss this with my employer again although they have been unable to shed any light so far.
The duty of care to employees seems to have been mislaid.

Yes Robin’s got it right. People with diabetes are recommended to be extra careful with ‘social distancing’ but are not on the list of extremely vulnerable people who are recommended to fully ’self isolate’. Last Monday’s press briefing, and subsequent reporting of it have rather confused matters, but the links @Robin posted have been updated since 🙂

However... I’ve just read somewhere else that the BBC have mentioned T1 as ‘isolate’ again in tonight’s news, so keep an eye out for updates!

If they intend to include everyone with T1 they're doing a really bad job at communicating it.

I think some media are casually mixing up ‘social distancing’ and ‘isolating’ - which is very confusing. Until I came on this forum tonight, I thought I knew where I was!

As far as I understood it, it’s only a small number of ‘severely at risk’ people who are getting the letters and have to shut themselves in for 12 weeks eg people having chemo, people who’ve revived a donor organ (so are on immune-suppressants).

People with diabetes are in a higher risk group than people without any underlying health conditions and should be scrupulous about social distancing and go out as little as possible, but don’t come in to the 1 million plus people above who have to shut themselves in.

But - having said that - I’ve not heard Type 1 differentiated from Type 2 in these instructions, so now, having read here that some members heard Type 1 specifically mentioned, I’m a little worried.

I now have no work but was working up until the end of last week full time and I just self isolated the rest of the time. Now just self-isolating- everywhere is closed and I have no money anyway.

Tonight’s BBC news reiterated the advice exactly as you said. Self isolation only for the more extremely at risk (chemo/dialysis/transplant etc)

There are apparently approx. 1.5m people on the 'required to self isolate for 12 weeks from when they receive the letter' list. It might be that T1s are because T1 is auto immune but there again I haven't a clue whether eg hypothyroid coeliac or folk with RA are concerned and they are also auto immune hence I'll only know when I do or don't get a letter, exactly the same as everyone else with anything else, unless they already have cancer they are receiving treatment for or are on dialysis etc, in which case I'm grateful I only have T1, a bit of PAD and emphysema, and am considered ancient, anyway.

The list of people who will be advised via a letter in the coming days, will also have access to a support network that will be put in place to pick up meds and food etc if they have nobody to help them, which requires a completely new infrastructure. It's understandable that they need to keep that group as small as possible while still protecting the most serious at risk cases so as not to drain the ol' finances. I guess they've weighed up the costs versus the numbers and included the most serious cases. My understanding is that diabetics aren't on the list. Perhaps by default some diabetics may be on the list, but for other reasons. I'd be very surprised if I get the letter. Stay safe everyone x

They said if you don't hear and you think you should contact your GP or Clinician. I can see there phones being blocked in a week or two.

How is isolation going for you? It is a difficult time for us all, but the forum is doing well with lots of ideas and information being posted. I've not been in contact with any one (except my husband!) for nearly 3 weeks now, so it is becoming a way of life.
