Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hello to everyone. We are new to the forum and are hoping someone might be able to help us please. My husband has been a type 1 diabetic for 30 years and is normally quite stable. He attended a daphne course a few years ago and was put on a background insulin (night and morning) and uses a pen for each meal. He is also on metaformin.
Over the last five days his blood sugar levels keep falling. This began on our holiday away. He is not doing anything strenuous or out of the norm. He is well versed in his control but we are very concerned about this situation . We are testing his blood every couple of hours as it keeps dipping right down. His pancreas stopped producing insulin 30 years ago so we don't think it can be making insulin again or could it? Type 1 is in family. Anyone else out there who has experience of this at all, please do let us know.
many thanks

Hi Marting, welcome to the forum 🙂 It may be related to the different environment/food/activity levels encountered on holiday. Many people find that they become more sensitive to insulin and it could be therefore that he needs to reduce his insulin doses - has he been doing this? Sometimes the effect can be quite pronounced, so it may take a little time to find his new insulin:carbs ratio (the amount of insulin he needs per 10g of carbs). He will probably also need to reduce his background insulin. What insulins does he use? It's possible that he no longer needs the metformin, which is used to overcome insulin resistance.

Are you still on holiday, or can you contact his DSN?

I've certainly had to dial my insulin down during this spell of hot weather. And depending where you were on holiday, I found being at high altitude is another reason for having to dial down, when I've had holidays in the Alps.

Hi Marting. 🙂 Being outside on a hot, sunny day drops my glucose significantly whether I've got rapid insulin on board or not. Where did you go on holiday? 🙂

I used to love southern Crete ! I only had to take Lantus all day, no fast-acting, but I did need some with dinner. Sadly it wore off as I acclimatised to the heat ! By the time we came home it would be back to normal.
