Hi all,

just got diagnosed with type2 on the 4th of june...

Aparantly genetics dosent care how otherwise healthy you are.....

Is it normal to drop a lot of weight?

Neil

Hi Njc, and welcome. Did you drop a lot of weight before being diagnosed and was it a planned drop?

No not at all, ive dropped 7lbs since. Might not sound a lot, but ive been 13st 8 for about 20 years.

Hi Neil - I was about the same weight for years up until my DX in March last year, around 84kg, so 13 st something. My doc also thought that genetics was probably a big factor.

I began losing some weight after DX as I started being a bit more mindful about eating, then kept going with it, at first just because I discovered I could, then because I found I kind of enjoyed getting skinny, and finally in a more committed way when I learned about the possibility of getting to remission from weight loss, pretty much regardless of what weight you started at. https://www.diabetes.org.uk/guide-t...eating-your-diabetes/type2-diabetes-remission

After about 6 months I'd lost ~12kg and my BG profile was pretty much "normal". I've stabilised (for the moment!) at ~64kg, lower than it needs to be, but anyway my doc reckons I've achieved the "remission" thing. It's a strategy worth thinking about.

Good luck!

Hi Neil and welcome.
Weight loss can certainly be a diabetes symptom. Do/did you have other symptoms like thirst and the associated overly regular urinating?
I cut out all the sweet stuff when I started with the thirst and constant weeing and the weight just dropped off me at a rate of exactly 4lbs a week. That has stopped now that I am down to a healthy BMI (I lost a couple of stone) and now eat a very low carb, higher fat diet but I catch sight of my bare arms sometimes and I am struck that they do not look like mine even several months later. Oddly I am happy to see my stomach so much flatter, but the bulk that I lost off my arms is very striking..... I have horses and do quite a lot of physical work, so losing that muscle mass off my arms was a bit of a shock. It was an area of my body that I most suffered muscle fatigue.... just washing my hair or holding my phone to my ear gave me "the burn" I should mention that I had sudden onset symptoms and a hugely high HbA1c of 112 and they are now thinking I am type 1 and treating me with insulin and I am awaiting test results for that. Sudden weight loss with type 2 may be less common.

Do you know your HbA1c reading and if so, do you mind sharing it with us. It helps us to have an idea of where on the diabetes scale you are and give you a starting point for your journey with it.

I had noticed that women that have horses are indeed strong and toned,I had a girlfriend years ago that had horses,I went to a lot of shows with her and to the side saddle championships at the 3 counties showground at Malvern,if I'm honest I found horses a little intimidating but I did enjoy the alcohol that was aplenty at events 😉

I'm OK with the weight loss but like you it's the loss of muscle mass that I hate. What was firm and toned is now soft and wobbly, but looking to the future I suppose that's a small price to pay for being a healthier weight.

Martin
I do wonder if that filled out toned look was partly due to fat padding things out but my arms are now almost half the size they were which is just weird. I agree though, the weight loss overall is a really nice bonus and I don't want to put any of that 2 stone back on. Everyone says how fantastic I look now.... both to my face and behind my back to relatives..... so not just buttering me up. I'm still a long way off being skinny but my arms are heading that way.

Hi, thank all for the extra information, very welcome.

My hbA1c was 72

my first symptoms of type 2 started when i was only 9st. i had a hyper of 19

I am trying to get more protein into my diet. I was so fixated on carbs I wasn't looking at anything else. Shocked when I found I was only getting around 800 calories a day. I wasn't just on a low carb diet, I was on a real diet. Rectified now and up to 1800 a day on average.

Not in denial about age but pleased to still have all my hair, for it not to be completely grey and the fact that I can still run up the stairs two at a time.

Martin

Well done for realising that Martin and for getting the calories back up. That binge of brie cheese is a deffo weight increase, I ate 3 times last week and no weight loss at all this week, mind I have over indulged on a meal out too this past week. 🙂
