Hi all, I’m a reluctant member of the new to diabetes world!! !
I’m 51, just started on metformin twice daily. I’m approximately 4 stone overweight and have had a few health issues which have affected my ability to exercise, currently recovering from a detached retina, so off work, and feeling really low and fed up with this additional diagnosis of type 2 diabetes .
Hoping that taking the step to join this forum which help me be positive and start looking after myself a bit better

Hi Karen, and welcome to our world. It's not a bad place really and there are some wonderful, knowledgable, people about. I guess you were diagnosed on the basis of an HbA1c result. Do you know what it was? Not being nosey but if you read around the forum you will find that HbA1c result swapping is par for the course amongst diabetics because it basically defines where you are on the roller coaster.

Hi Karen .. I have replied on the other thread about my weight loss and how it has turned my HBA1c from 58 back last year to a fantastic 37 this time around.. the best thing about the Slimming world eating plan is that the weight loss is based around what you eat and not necessarily your exercise... although moving more helps with both body and MIND which is equally as important.. especially when you also have your new diagnosis... please don’t feel this is the end of the road .. I am proof that with a good eating plan and light walking / swimming has helped me get to this point .. where I am no longer on any medication at all. Good luck with your new chapter and please don’t hesitate to message me

Welcome to the forum Karen, from a fellow T2

Hi thanks for your kind replies! I must admit to feeling really down today, day 1 of new lifestyle
My HbA1c in feb 2019 was 61, i made some changes and repeat in March was 54, so I’m hopeful I can turn things around
Always a bit of a shock I suppose, and worrying about potential complications, but need to start trying for a more positive outlook!!
Looking forward to reading about people’s journeys and getting some positive vibes already, so thank you

Welcome Karen, if it helps, I spent my first couple of weeks post diagnosis convinced I would starve to death and may as well just give up o_O I am now just over a year in and never been happier or healthier! I chose the low carb route and completely overhauled my shopping and cooking, now I wouldn’t go back to my old ways no matter what, I am 4 stone lighter and haven’t had any issues with my angina in six months :D

Wow brilliant!! There’s definitely positivity on this forum, so keeping my fingers crossed haha!!
I’m finding the food issues the main concern, and am awRyof the benefits of low carb route.
What sort of meals are you having?
Oh and congratulations on the brilliant weight loss! Gives me hope

Hello Karen and welcome to the club, don’t feel low about feeling low. I too felt that way and for the first few weeks was convinced my GP had made a mistake, he hadn’t. I also thought I would never eat a proper meal again especially as I’m a fussy eater. You will discover other things and what foods work for you and we are always here to help. Good luck

Hi Karen, I love a good salad with avocado and chicken or a nice juicy steak 😛 I also make a lot of stir fry or cauliflower cheese but not with the flour base cheese sauce, you might find this link helpful:
