Came as a bit of a shock to be told that I am prediabetic and that my cholesterol is slightly high.
As I guess most people do, I looked for immediate actions to deal with the issues.
Lose weight, exercise, diet.
At 6 ft and 74kg (BMI of 22), I’m not exactly overweight. I walk briskly with the dog for around 8 miles a day, cycle, do some weight training, and my diet is pretty good. Plenty of veg, certainly not a pie and pasta person, don’t drink much alcohol, no beer, and limit red meat. The only weakness is cheese, but again, I don’t go overboard with it.
The HbA1c test was performed as a result of an optician saying that a cataract had developed a little faster. Had I had steroids or did I have diabetes? No chance of that, I thought, but did the sensible thing and asked the GP for a test.
I guess I’ll just lurk on this site, looking for some inspiration. With the HbA1c test being affected by sugar levels over the last 8-12 weeks, I guess the first thing to do will be to get another test in three months to see if this is developing.

Hi @Mijo , welcome to our friendly forum.
Please don’t just be a lurker here ask questions we’ll do our best to help.

I know this must have come as a shock to you, but being dx (diagnosed) with pre diabetes means you have a chance to turn this around.
Imo the way to do this is by doing what most of us in here do , cut down on carbohydrates, , till you find suitable substitutes for things like potatoes, pasta , rice , breakfast cereals and bread esp white, fill up on veg that grows above ground, we can have problems with fruit though healthy , it’s the fructose, though it’s a natural sugar it’s still sugar. many people tolerate berries better (not grapes though, we call them little sugar bombs )
We usually have no problems with protein and good fats, so cheese needn’t be off the menu, nor butter or cream.

We have lots of good info here
useful-links-for-people-new-to-diabetes
For futur reference you’ll find it at the top of the newbies forum.
Scroll down to the T2 section
Their is a lot of info there but I suggest you start with these
Maggie Davies letter.
Jennifer’s advise.
And as it’s most unlikely you’ll be provided with the very tool that can help you make informed food choices (I suggest you do ask to be provided one, but expect to be told things like, no you only need the Hb1ac Test, it will only upset you. Make you anxious etc etc. )
Test review adjust by Alan S
Testing on a budget also by Alan S .
SD Codefree glucose meter .
If you decide to self test we use the mmol measurement in the uk and you’re entitled to claim VAT relief , this is a perfectly good meter that has the cheapest testing strips we know of.
I hope to see you around here.

If you’d like to see what we eat , coz we sure don’t live on lettuce and fresh air, we get to eat good tasty things

Welcome to the forum Mijo

Welcome to the Forum. Pre-diabetes is easier to turn around than diabetes itself. I went on a prevention programme and went out of pre-diabetes. Unfortunately, my hba1c has gone back to 42 but that does not happen to everyone. I was not overweight and am not now, in fact, I am underweight. I am self-testing and trying to find out what is causing the problems with me. Not sure what it is but must be something somewhere for it to go up again.

Some people on here have gone from very high hba1c diabetic readings to much lower normal ones. my Dad in law's neighbour has reduced her diabetic readings to normal ones too through weight loss. Her GP still says she is diabetic though as he feels that once diabetic, always diabetic but just with better control.

Lots of people here do very well so you will have lots of help and advice. They certainly helped me a lot. The recipes are lovely if you have a look at those.

Welcome @Mijo
Please use the site and ask any questions.
Cheese is not a problem, I eat it by the ton.
What we need to watch is ourr carbohydrate intake. They are the little nasties that cause us real issues.
As previous post by members state you can turn it around by diet and exercise
Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Glad I am not the only cheese addict Vince.

Met up with some friends last night and one of the guys there has come out of pre-diabetes. My friend Diane looks as though she has gone diabetic. They have done an hba1c and checking other things too as she has had bouts of pancreatitis before. Her blood when they checked was 26 and now down to 16. I am wondering if she may be late onset Type 1 as that seems high to me. She is 65.

Cheese? Someone mention cheese?? LOL welcome Mijo!
