Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hello! I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes on Christmas Eve - not the best present I've ever had!

At first I was worried about giving myself injections, but to be honest this hasn't really been a problem. I've still got lots to learn and I'm sure I'll get better at it, but at least my hand has stopped shaking now when I start to put the needle in!

One thing I've found really difficult though is the diet. I seem to be hungry all the time and I find it difficult to resist snacking between meals. Does anyone else find this?

Really, I've joined this site because it's nice to know I'm not alone. I don't know anyone else with Type 1 so it's difficult to talk to people who understand the problems associated with it. So, hello everyone, I look forward to chatting to some of you.🙂

Hi Andy,

Yes i get hungry lots but then also i get too full so i dont want to eat when i want to. the best thing to do is learn about your body and what is best for you.
The best things to eat when your hungry between meals i think is fruit, but watch out some like grapes are a well bad idea.

Welcome to the site, this place is great its helped me out so much.

Hi Phoebe,

Thanks for the swift and warm welcome. I think I'm going to take your advice and go and eat some fruit right now! I hear it takes quite a while to really get blood glucose levels under control but it's frutrating because you want things to be right straight away.

Anyway, it's nice to know I've got people to chat to on here when things get difficult!

Hi Andy, welcome to the group!

I was also hungry all the time and wanting to snack soon after diagnosis. I realised that this was because I'd changed the pattern of my eating - eating three regular meals a day and nothing in between. Prior to diagnosis, and for as long as I can remember, I was a 'grazer' - someone who was constantly snacking! Now, after education from my diabetes team, I can adjust my insulin to 'cover' snacks until the next meal.

Depending on the person (and I'm lucky in this respect), something like a digestive biscuit with a cup of tea isn't going to have a big effect on your blood sugar, or eat things like peanuts that have very little carbohydrate.

I actually find little and often is a far better way of keeping my sugars stable rather than just 3 larger meals a day. As I now try to only eat 20/30g of carbs per meal I find I have to snack inbetween on an apple or something like otherwise I dip too low. Only think I will say Andy - is that everyone is different and treats their diabetes in a different way and finds a regime that works for them...you will gat a sense of that when you read through some of the posts on this board!
