Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi folks, I was diagnosed with type 2 on Christmas eve, I got a call from my gp surgery from the receptionist, telling me that a gp wants to see me about my diabetes!! As you can imagine my Christmas wasn't ideal.. I spent the next two weeks in complete shock, totally overwhelming anxiety and depression. I already have fibromyalgia, high blood pressure, depression, anxiety and high cholesterol. This just rocked me to the core!
Once the festivities had called down, I saw my gp.. who gave me a website address to look at, and said that he would put me on statins to shift some cholesterol.
It took me weeks of research to get my head around the whole situation. Thankfully now I am getting it under control. However, I am still learning..

Hi Carol, I have recently been diagnosed type 2 as well and also have high cholesterol. So I am on a statin once a day plus metformin for the diabetes. I am currently trying to reduce my carbs as I think that is the main problem that I can address. Next blood test is July time I think so time will tell. I am learning too.

Hi and welcome to the forum. I too was told of my diagnosis over the phone. Not ideal!

Hi Val999, it's pretty daunting isn't it?! I am on metformin too, only one a day just now, but I think that I am going to have to take one in the mornings as well, hopefully it will keep my bg levels from spiking too high during the day. I am eating lchf, and have been since mid January. I have lost just over 2 stone since, and it really helps my bg levels stay lower than they were. I just had my three month review and my hba1c is down from 53 to 43. So, I know that I am going the right way. Doesn't stop me having panicky days though...

Hi Carol, welcome to the forum 🙂 What an awful time to receive your diagnosis! :( Not that there's a good time, of course. Can I suggest having a quick read of Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter? They should help you to get to grips with things. Also, a really excellent book, Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker, comes highly recommended by many of our members 🙂

Please feel free to ask any and every question you may have, and we will do our best to help out 🙂 There is a lot to take in, but there's always someone here to help if something is worrying or confusing you 🙂

That's such a nice welcome... thank you Northener ☺ I am already beginning to feel very welcome and comfortable here!! I will certainly have a good look at those suggestions, and I am sure that I will be asking questions real soon. Many thanks again ☺

Hi Carol & welcome to the forum.🙂 I was also told over the phone. I had no idea I had diabetes. No symptoms at all. It been quite a rough year for my wife too who has been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia & psoriatic arthritis. We are only in our early 40's & have been very active, then all this comes along & everything changes. Life can be a right bugger sometimes.

Another lovely friendly welcome... thank you Mark, I can totally sympathise with you both.. It's awful when things pop out of the blue and shatter your plans and aspirations!! I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in May 2012( although I having symptoms for at least 10 yrs), thing just seem to have gone downhill for me since. My mobility especially, however, I have forced myself to move about more whilst having to increase pain meds of course. But, like you, I have managed to make quite an impact on my hba1c since being diagnosed, by eating lchf and a bit more movement. My fibromyalgia had made me so immobile that my weight just sky rocketed. Lchf has helped me lose 3 stone since diagnosis and I am hoping to keep losing the rest of this awful baggage, my cholesterol was 6.1 at diagnosis and is now 4.4 although my Triglycerides still stay too high, so definitely a work in progress. I completely agree with you both though... life can definitely be a right bugger sometimes.

Hi and welcome Carol.I was diagnosed just before you and I totally agree with the complete shock feeling.my gp told me all my blood tests were fine except for having type 2 diabetes and handed me an old information pack and told me to stop eating sweets.came out of there feeling very alone and not having a clue what to do next.apart from a quick chat with a nurse who knew some diabetes stuff the only real help I have had was from reading up about it and advice received from this forum.good luck and well done on the progress you have made so far.

I completely understand and sympathise... it just seems that they dump a diagnosis on you and take a step back.
I asked about emotional support, as my anxiety disorder really went into orbit! All I got was, "well, you could try cbt!" Don't know if you have ever been to cbt?! But, seriously I found it no help whatsoever last time I had it!
You can't beat, talking therapy, can you? Especially with folks who understand what you are talking about and completely understand why and how you are feeling like you do! That... is what helps me most ☺

I think I must be one of the lucky ones. Our practice (which was voted worst in our area😱) are quite well educated with Diabetes. After seeing the doctor, I got to see the DN the same day. She told me to me to reduce my carb intake, which most DN's don't even mention. One of the doctors I saw also recommended the 8 week blood sugar diet.

Wow.. That's impressive! I got mine to agree to give me a meter, but I think that was because of my anxiety levels, I don't think that I could have copied with not knowing if I am improving or not!! The practice nurse (not a diabetes nurse) certainly didn't want to give me a meter and was pretty lifted when I insisted that my gp had given it the ok

I phoned my doctors and asked receptionist for an app with diabetes nurse she said we dont have any dn she went away and came back offering me an app with nurse who specialises in diabetes but on talking to her she says she doesnt really but does know more about it than other nurses there.:D Carol have not had cbt though been offered it but defo not for me.talking therapy does work and got me back on the straight and narrow.they dont judge you and want to help which makes such a difference imo.
