Hi fellow forum members. I am coming to the end of my tether here, what with carb-counting & dieting. Mostly because it doesn't seem to be working! I am taking one Metformin a day at the mo & without any side-effects. I would like to ask for some advice if you don't mind. 1) I'm going on holiday soon. I like to have a drink now & then. I would probably drink about 1-2 pints of lager/beer a day with the odd short now & then. Is this OK on one Metformin a day? 2) If not, should I stop the Metformin while on holiday? Or just put up with 1 pint a day. 3) My diabetes nurse says there is no point in checking my own blood levels anymore. Could I ask for an interim check to see how I'm doing or should I just put myself on to the 2 Met a day that I'm meant to be on anyway? All replies/suggestions will be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Hiya :D

1) I'm on two metformin a day and was probably drinking probably a couple of pints in the evening with no ill effect

3) What are you doing with the results that you get? If you don't do nothing with them then she has a point. If you are following something not dissimilar to test-test-test and adjusting your diet then she is being a ninny (but you ought to tell her you are using the information in a useful way if you haven't already)

Oh, and if you are supposed to be on 2xMet then it's worth trying to go to that dose - but probably after your holiday as you could get a week of tummy naughtiness when you add the extra pill before it all settles down.

I was going to reply with exactly what Mark has said on all points!

Don't panic if you do get slightly sozzled by accident - on the rare occasions that I do have a tipple these days, I have a tendency to overdo it a bit because the first glass disables my OFF switch! No ill effects except a monster hangover. Enjoy your holiday.

Thanks people! Our local surgery & area all say 'don't bother testing yourself anymore'. Even though self-testing makes me do things differently according to the result. They say it's only the long-term (six monthly) test that is of any importance! thanks on the booze help too. Not sure I can go without it completely, but it sounds like I should be fine on what I like to drink.
