Am annoyed......got a busy day today so have bought a Sainsbury's Tuna and Sweetcorn sandwich on my way to work for lunch.

Just about to eat it but low and behold it tells you how many carbs are in 100g of sandwich but doesn't actually say anywhere on the pack how many grams the sandwich actually is which makes it impossible to work out the carbs accurately..........find this very annyoing. Yes I can probably make a good educated guess but feel like I really shouldn't have to.

Can feel a strongly worded letter to Sainsbury's coming on!

It might be a bit annoying, but overall, food labelling is so much better now than in the past, eg nutrition contents on most foods. If you do write, then make sure you acknowledge that nutritional information was included, just that you want to know the weight of the item. It may be a legal loophole, due to variation of weights of sandwiches.

I know exactly how you feel! Sometimes the makers are just fulfilling their legal obligations to provide info - maybe they don't realise that it is of very great importance to the 2.5 million diabetics in this country, especially those trying to dose insulin correctly! I was recently trying to work out the saturated fat content of a baby bel cheese - again it gave me the 100g info, but didn't say how much each cheese weighed, or the total weight of the 6-cheese pack!😡

Yup this issue often crops up, i do agree with copepod though labelling has come along way

Actually, sandwiches are relatively easy to work out - bread is generally 10g per slice, and unless the filling includes jam, banana etc, that's all the CHO.

However, I've also found it useful to estimate food weights when at home, then weigh to check, so that I can make a reasonable guess when away from home.

Sainsburys are no better than most of the stores for their sandwiches. Tell you per 100g then leave you for dead as to what the weight is. Especially as so many sandwich makers make their sandwiches look thick with a big dollop where they cut the sandwich and nothing at the edges.

The other thing that annoys me is if you buy something prepared in store, for example a cake or pie, then they don't seem to have any obligation to tell you the weight or content of it.

Surely there is not harm in their advising the contents per pack, can it be so difficult to do?

yeah when the carbs aren't on a sandwich packet I just take 4 units. (in fact i take 8 units because my ration is 2:10g)

We have found this - so we just guesstimate - 15g for brown bread and 20g for white! Einstein, what i do now is ask at the deli - they always found out for me and write it on a slip and pop it in the bag - especially good for the sausages as they can vary between 1g and 8g of carbs! Havent tried asking for pies - but then we try to steer clear of them because of the fats - makes is levels shoot up hours after!😱 Bev

Bev,

I steer clear of the sausages, the old Rabbi might be buying his as well 😉

And pies, well they're not really on my agenda only as a treat.

Somehow all packet sandwiches end up between 48 and 60 grms. And 16-20 grams per slice is a fair average for what I've found.

Such fun, something else to store in my thingy-me-jig - memory thats it! 🙄

Ooopps!! Are you Jewish then?😱 Bev

I tried to look at the lowest carbs on some bread rolls but the NV's was printed on the underside of the lable so until you bought the rolls, opened the pack and removed the rolls you had no idea about anything... I have reported them to trading standards!
