Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Tomorrow I will have known that I have diabetes for a year. My whole life has changed but I have survived because I have learnt so much from the lovely people on this forum who have always encouraged and supported me on what could otherwise have been a lonely journey. Thank you to each and every one of you.
On Tuesday I have a meeting with my DN. Not looking forward to it as she is always so negative and dismisses everything that I have tried to do including countermanding the doctor's prescription for 50 strips a month to test and saying that I do not need to as I am type 2. Not all the doctors at the surgery agree on this and there is one who says he thinks I am really type 1.5. (I suppose they will decide at some point which type I am if they can be bothered.) Will just have to bite my tongue and try not to loose my temper with the DN. I am more irritable these days, so she should watch out! 😛

grrrrrr!!! strips!! 😡.....I am so happy tho you found this site like me and others......try not to lose your temper!

Write down what you want to say and if you think you are not t2 insist for a proper diagnoses, there are tests that can be done as I have been told on this forum....I also will be asking for this test as I am not sure if I am t1 or t2.
Good luck!!!

Best of luck with your review, I am due for mine in a months time, and I am already in disagreement with some of the doctors.

Is there only one DN that you can see or if there's more than one do they all have a similar approach?

I would try and get that test done to confirm which type of diabetes you have, at least then you can get the right treatment for the right type of diabetes.

As Jalapino says wright down any questions you have, what are your levels like as these can affect things like mood. Test strips are getting to be a right pain for type 2's to get on prescription, even if the guidelines and DVLA rules states if on certain meds drivers need to test. Doctors are still ignoring these rules and restricting strips due to the cost of strips.

You have come a long way in a year, despite the DN's negativity. In my opinion people should be supported and encouraged, not dismissed and made to feel bad - she is in the wrong job 😡

Celebrate your achievements and have a little treat, you deserve it for all your hard work! 🙂

Thanks for the advice and support. Pav I asked for a test to determine which type of diabetes and the senior partner in the practicee said "It makes no difference the treatment is the same. If you are 1.5 you will get worse more quickly". Don't know if that is true? He is also adamant that diet and exercise does not work and that I should have gone onto Metformin and statins at once They have not been helpful and really don't want to know if you don't follow what they recommend to the letter. I suppose that the doctors feel that you are challenging their knowledge. I'll try to stay calm on Tuesday and just listen to what she says says and make my own judgements after that. She is always very negative and makes me feel like an idiot.

It's complete and utter nonsense to assert that diet and exercise don't work - there have been countless examples of people here succeeding on that regime. Even if you need medication, it won't work unless you support it with a suitable diet and regular activity, so they are just making a fool of themselves. :(

Don't let them make you feel like an idiot - if they make you feel that way, then they are the idiots. This is a two way thing where they are supposed to work with you, not dictate and criticise you. I do know the type though, you try to tell them something and it simply falls on deaf ears. Bite your tongue and nod in the right places and hopefully it will soon be over! 🙂

It is simply not fair how some people with diabetes are treated....it is not like we asked to have this?

I really hope you come out of this with a good result 🙂
