I'd be interested to find out what has happened to the rate of vascular complications too since the phasing out of animal insulins. Animal insulins contain c-peptide but this is removed from human ones, and c-peptide is increasingly being recognised as having a role to play in blood vessel conditions. I wonder why it's removed from human insulins?

I would just like to point out animal insulin's have not and are not being phased out.
When ill informed people make statements relating to the phasing out and or withdrawal of animal insulin's it upsets a lot of people. Until you have it in concrete please refrain from making statements to this effect 😡 ta muchly 🙂

What are its characteristics, in comparison to the more common analogues?

Bolus 30 mins before eating, peaks for 2 hours so fab for certain foods and lasts for me 5 hours. Others find it lasts 6 hours or so.
Porcine is the same durration etc. I don't use porcine as allergic to it big time.

If I ever get a pump I would defo consider giving it a go....🙂

Many low carbers use porcine or bovine insulin as a bolus due to it's longer peak as helps with the extra protien and or fat they consume. I'm pos the only one in the country who uses bovine in a pump though. Loads use porcine.

I reckon it only lasts 5 hours in you Sue as you are on small doses and presumably eat only sensible amounts of carbs
I think it's probably correct that most insulins hit with a harder punch at peak time and generally last longer in larger doses and suspect that the basal analogs are more likely to give complete 24 hour cover in those on higher doses per body weight
