AHA - but she has CHRONIC diabetes ROFL.

I expect mine and yours is temporrary, so hers must be worse .......

And, of course, they had to feature a picture of her in glasses to emphasise the point. I wonder why they didn't go with 'I might lose my feet' or 'My kidneys might stop working'? As you say, what she says was accurate, so hopefully that is a good thing. Her experiences must mirror those of Crystal Bowersox who was on American Idol a couple of seasons ago - she is a Type1 on a pump, and was hospitalised with DKA at one point and nearly had to pull out. She now works to help with diabetes advocacy in the US. 🙂

Few thousand sympathy votes there then🙂

Few thousand sympathy votes there then🙂

It's a double-edged sword isn't it? On the one hand there are genuine obstacles she has to consider that other contestants don't have to and she wants to show that diabetes doesn't have to stand in the way (a good thing in my opinion 🙂), on the other hand it may be seen as a 'sob story' angle to garner votes. I would imagine the press are eager for any 'dramatic' angle though, and the explanation of the problems was accurate so someone, somewhere might now be better informed about it 🙂

Publicity Stunt.. or should I say vote begging!

Sorry they've sensationalised her condition if they/she wanted to publicise that T1 diabetics can and do lead a normal life and can achieve their goals etc. then it would have been far better to keep it under wraps she got booted off or won...

As now everybody will wonder was it sympathy that got the vote or talent!

Just imagine the impact on the public, diabetic children and their parents when they realise that fundamentally the world see's you has a normal person first, and you can take aim for your goals in life with diabetes.

Me I can't abide any reality shows.. So don't watch X factor or any reality show! There again I don't do soap opera's either lol

Good on Amelia for openly talking about it🙂 Going blind from diabetes has to be top of everyone's concerns and the fact that she is so young and switched on to the dangers of uncontrolled diabetes is refreshing to hear.

These contestants are role models to the younger generation, if by talking about it some young people with diabetes sit up and take notice then the article has served a purpose.

LOL - I thought Who's Amelia? - then read the article and found the A to my Q,

Nobody!! LOL

To be fair, she is somebody. But probably not who she thinks she is.🙂

I'd never heard of her either but it does make disturbing reading. Some of the claims are a bit wild and there's an undercurrent of self-reassurance. Repetition of how much she's believed in and how much the public must love her. She must be very insecure and it makes you wonder what will happen when she finds out she's just a commodity for someone else to market.

Sad old game, the biz of show.

suffers from the more dangerous Type 1 diabetes

perhaps eluding to that other age old myth that Type 2 is a mild version of the disease?
Still a refreshing change to the "lazy fat diabetics are killing our NHS" hysterics.

I read this too and it really wound me up! It makes a being diabetic sound like a 'disability' and something terrible to be feared, whereas it's, more often than not, perfectly manageable once you get your head around it and know how to look after yourself. I also read on the Daily Mail (aka Daily Fail) website that she has 'severe' diabetes, whatever that is.

Anyway, I have up to 10 insulin injections a day, not just four so can I win the X factor too...?!

Unsurprisingly, this rag comes up with the shocking claim that 'the adrenalin could send her into a diabetic coma'!!!! 😱 🙄

I thought the People article was reasonable for a tabloid but this one is true to form over-sensationalisation!

Er... how does adrenalin send you into a coma? I must have lived a very boring life as I have had diabetes for 32 years and never wound up in a coma

adrenalin can raise BG levels (or lower them in some people!) so this is probably what they've picked up on. Doubtful a single scary event could plunge you into an instant coma though, and the paper seems to imply that it's a likely thing to happen! 🙄

This was also online http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/tv/s103...1850/x-factor-amelia-has-type-1-diabetes.html

Comments on that have annoyed me as she hasn't 'just' announced her Diabetes, it was made public knowledge when she first appeared on the programme 😡 It's not like she's tweeting 'I'm a Type 1 Diabetic so you should vote for me' 😛

Agreed, she;s never hidden it - why should she? But she's never made a big deal of it as far as I've seen. Just the press looking for something xfactorish to write that they can blow out of all proportion.

Well she is in the bottom two, so I hope her sob story ploy didn't work and the public see sense and kick her out.

What a stupid child not to elaborate on the other dangers. What makes her think that she has it any more chronic than the rest of us? And no I am not a fan of any of those shows lol She either needs more insulin or she needs to stop cramming c**p in her mouth to bring those blood sugars down 🙂

Bear in mind that these are not a detailed analysis of her life with diabetes and the ins and outs of her control - they are the twisted imaginings of the tabloid press! 😱
