hello fellow diabetics. 🙂 Happy New Year folks. I hope you are all feeling good today.

I became diabetic, like my husband, a few months ago. I'm an octogenarian and have joined mainly to find a walking companion. I don't expect to be swamped with replies from people of my generation, thus the title of my thread, but it would only take just one person to inspire me. I don't like doing things alone. I've owned a pedometer for abo ut 6 years but I configured it using both metric and imperial numbers so it has never worked. One day I'll sort that out .......perhaps.
Is there a thread for walking beginners? I don't mean toddlers lol I mean a thread for novices to record our daily steps.
best wishes to all,
Steppie

Welcome @Steppie 🙂 I haven’t seen a thread like that here. I use my Fitbit to record my daily steps. Perhaps something like that might suit you better than the pedometer? Mine does heartrate and things too.

Hi @Steppie whereabouts do you live? It might be worth asking if your thread title can be changed to show where you would like to walk.
If you have a smartphone it might well have a built in pedometer. My Samsung one does.

Welcome @Steppie
Walking is a great exercise for people with diabetes and more. As well as managing diabetes, it can be sociable, gets you out in the fresh air and helps with stability and cardio vascular fitness.
Have you thought about joining The Ramblers? Their group walks vary from leisurely strolls that can be done on accessible routes with pushchairs or wheelchairs to technical routes requiring ice axes and crampons.

Steppie - I don't know where you live, but here in Leicester there are at least 3 walking groups in the nearby town and one in our village which all welcome frequent or casual members.

I lost one of my walking buddies last year and found myself just not covering the miles, so I do get the concept of "better with companions".

You could find your local Facebook pages to be useful for these sorts of things. Most groups have one, even if only for keeping in touch with each other.

Welcome to the forum.

Our local U3A has various walking groups - some friends of ours lead lots of the walks, and other friends also walk a lot, leading on from when they used to be involved with homing trainee guide dogs for the blind. They still also 'foster' retired guide dogs who are never phased by 8 of us, so strangers to the dogs, turning up at their house for committee meetings of the local prostate cancer support group we belong to, that their foster 'dad' is chairman of.

what a pity! I was once on a site, (now closed) where we all recorded our daily steps and it became very competitive and great fun. The only smart thing I have is a TV and I detest it.

Nowadays, I can only walk within my home, for various reasons that I do not wish to explain in a public forum, so I am attempting to somehow reach out for support and encouragement. Diabetes is not my only medical problem. When I was in this same situation 10+ years ago, i began walking just 500 daily steps and 2 years later, I was doing 12000+.......then the site closed down. I feel that I could repeat this if I had a companion to compete with.

I'm not sure if I can address all of you who replied in just this one post. Please advise me and I will follow your customary ways.

You can address who you want @Steppie 🙂 You can make a general post to everyone or if you want to address a particular person you can use the @ sign like I did before your name in this post.

Maybe you could start your own thread and we could add our steps? There are various daily threads where people post their morning blood sugar or whatever, so having a How Many Steps thread would fit right in.

Welcome to the forum @Steppie

I hope you can find a way to reset your pedometer to help with your walking / stepping ambitions.

Please do feel free to start a "How many steps today" thread in the Exercise section if you'd like to. I'm sure others would join in!

Are you planning on doing laps of your house to start with?
