Their is so much misinformation out there, many of our members on here were dx (diagnosed) with T1 later in life, so no you are not in the minority .

Hello, buddyxyz, there are quite few of us on here who developed Type 1 at a more mature age. I was 51, and was initially misdiagnosed as Type 2 because my GP wasn't aware that you could develop Type 1 at any age. Fortunately, she recognised that I wasn't responding to Type 2 meds and referred me to the hospital, who did the GAD test.
Oh, and Teresa May is another...

And me, although a spring chicken at only 42 and like Robin, wrongly diagnosed by gp

There will be more along later, there are quite a few of us late developers on the forum. 🙂

I'm another who got type 1 diabetes as an adult, aged 30 years. The majority of people with type 1 develop it as children, so we are in the minority, but not exceptionally rare. Fortunately we don't have to negotiate dealing with T1D as teenagers!

Welcome to this friendly forum! I was 58 when I was diagnosed and unlike some here, was called type one from the beginning. I also meet people who say it can't be type one and I just tell them they are are wrong and I am! How are you managing?

Hi Buddy, I was 45. Luckily my Gp was clued up, said she thought it was T1 and urgently referred my to the hospital consultant. ( however, 'Urgent' meant it was 3 months until I saw him and had no advice or guidance in the meantime 🙄). Found this forum and the rest is history....

I was 54 at diagnosis almost three years ago.

From what I can gather 50% of people diagnosed with T1 are over 18 at the time. It can happen at any stage of life - you are certainly not the first I've come across who has been diagnosed in their 60s

Hiya buddyxyz.🙂 I was dx 9 years ago aged 41. I recently met a fellow T1er who was dx aged 60. Apparently, half of all T1 diagnoses are in adults (but the cute little kiddies get all the media attention!)🙄

I was mis-diagnosed but it was the other way around. I was diagnosed as type 1 at the age of 54 but turned out in the end to be type 2. The thing is, the medical professionals that I was in contact with at the time did not think that there was anything unusual about my becoming type 1 at that age.

Interesting. I was diagnosed at nearly 29, almost 26 years ago, and was told then that it was relatively uncommon to be diagnosed at such an advanced age! I wonder whether late diagnosis is becoming more common, or whether in fact people have previously been diagnosed wrongly as type 2!

A friend of mine was diagnosed at about 50. He was diagnosed type one in a hospital.

There is a school of thought that some researchers believe that many people diagnosed with type two who end up on insulin after a couple of years despite sorting their diet are actually type one and was misdiagnosed. There has even been some research that show that older people with type one actually as the attack of the pancreas cells at a slower rate than those diagnosed younger, but they are still type one.

It's rarer, but not unheard of, to get it at your age.

That's what I was thinking.
