Hi Vee and welcome.
I didn't see my BG levels come down until I gave up on my daily porridge and fruit. I now find starting the day with an omelette and green salad really helps to keep my BGs low and stable and I don't feel deprived or hungry afterwards. I usually have mushrooms in it and any combination of onions, aubergine, peppers, ham and cheese and half a small avocado with my salad. That really works for me.

Thank you, funnily enough I’ve just put eggs and a can of mushrooms in my bag for lunch tomorrow, fingers crossed x

It’s very confusing when you get the diagnosis and such a shock, too.
Low carb eating is a huge asset...low carb, high fat. Has a huge impact on blood sugars. If you can do a bit of intermittent fasting as well then all the better. It’s all about not spiking your insulin levels.
It’s great that you’ve got a meter, too, so keep testing.
I would also question taking the metformin......did your doctor not give you the opportunity to make changes to your diet first? Personally for me I refused them and my GP was happy for me to make positive changes to my diet, which I did. I managed to bring my hba1c down and lose weight and put my diabetes into remission. So was there any need for the Metformin? Just a thought...I obviously don’t know your personal circumstances.
There’s a huge wealth of information out there....books, YouTube..so it’s relatively easy, if somewhat time-consuming, but worth it, to learn about your situation and make decisions about how you deal with your diabetes. Dr Jason Fung on YouTube is very interesting. The ‘Diet Doctor’ website was my ‘go to’ when I first started researching Keto and LCHF.
I have no faith in the diabetic nurse at my practice with her outdated nutritional advice..which is laughable. You would be better doing your own research via the internet and the diabetes forums.
But definitely lose some of the carbs from your daily diet...you’ll be amazed!!

Thank you for advice I will take a look. Theres so much out there I'm afraid of information overload so will look at everything gradually. The tablets are because I don't particularly eat badly I'm more likely to skip meals than eat c**p, I exercise 3 times a week and the weight doesn't want to come off, I have about half a stone to a stone to loose so not a dramatic amount. Just started this week in monitoring what causes my spikes and so far its just baked beans so will keep monitoring and adjusting accordingly.

Don’t worry too much about exercising....get your nutritional intake right first. I think that’s more important.

This was before I was diagnosed, I'm not going to change it at the mo or increase as like you I think the food is more important.
