Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi I was diagnosed in November as being diabetic type 2 my readings were around 24 most mornings when a friend tested me for a week 10 months before, they were still the same when I eventually went to the doctor for a check up, I must say all this time up to the visit I never felt ill at all.
Once diagnosed I was given medication and in less than 1 month I was so ill and run down, yes my readings were down to around 7 but I could not cope with the medication so I put the lot in the bin and decided I would try to do it with out tablets, all I have done is cut out all tea and coffee as I cant drink it without sugar and gone to beetroot juice ,pomegranate juice and plenty of water I also use CBD oil and a mushroom powder , reduced my bread and potato intake. I have got my morning readings down to 10 . my next step is to do some exercise which I have not done for 20+ years , although I am not overweight.
Looking forward to reading what you all do to keep your sugars down, and to try to get mine a little lower. thanks all.

Welcome Kevin. I am no expert myself but have learnt loads from this great forum! Check the sugars in the pomegranate juice. They may be high. Low carbing is the way to go - reduce all carbs - bread, rice, potatoes, pasta etc (no white if poss). It’s good to see you are testing - read the links at the top of the newbies section if you haven’t already. Fill up on proteins and veg that grows above ground. Be wary of fruit. Test before and after meals to see what you can tolerate (we are all different) It sounds as if you are on the right track without meds so keep it going! Great to see you are so positive too!

Hi Kevin. Welcome to the forum. I was the same I felt quite well up to diagnosis then I had never felt so poorly with the meds. I am still taking mine but hoping to come off them as I have brought my bg down with a LCHF WOE (low carb, high fat way of eating)
I have to say I actually winced when I read "pomegranate juice" I am no expert either but I thought pomegranates were one of the highest sugar fruits. But as you are testing you will be able to see the effect on you. We are all different and tolerate different foods.

I would recommend you to have a look in the food and carbs section to get an idea of different food choices. I cut carbs of all kinds and colours where I can, and replace them with healthy proteins and fats. This is working for me. Good luck!

Hi Kevin. You're a bit like me. I never felt ill before diagnosis 3 months ago. My home tests always showed 7 or 8 or so. I was classified borderline. Suddenly my December test by the hosp said 48! GP prescribed metformin but i didnt fancy the vomiting and diarrhoea that can go with it. So I've started a 5:2 diet. 2 weeks in I've lost 2 kg with no effort. I hope it continues and i hope your efforts work for you.
My main thing is I don't get hung up on it. I'm not calorie counting except on the 2 fasting days so most of the time life goes on as before.
Good luck
Graham

I have not gone down the Diet road as yet, (Just finished full Sunday roast ), I have not had much advise of does and don'ts when it comes to food as I now live in Bulgaria .
So will be looking more to the internet for what is good or not. the doctors are fine here you can just walk into the surgery no appointments needed, but I think they were a little eager to give me tablets which I have never been a tablet taker, I informed him and gave him 2 weeks readings and he was happy but not before I had an ecg, again no waiting just walk straight in and no charge either.
I will be going through the group pages for recommendations.

Hi Kevin. I still have roast dinners but forego the potatoes & have more green veg. It's just a matter of changing things slightly so your BG stays within limits (under 8.5 after eating).

Hi Graham,
I think the confusion you have may be between the two types of readings.
Your monitor tests in mmol/l and the doctor's HbA1 is in mmol\ mol !
The good news is that a "doctor's reading" of 48 is roughly the same as your meter reading of 7.7 which is at the the high end of pre diabetes.
With your changes of diet you should soon be below that and back into the normal range.
I was 58 mmol\ mol at first diagnosis, down to 51 at last reading and aiming for 48 next time, happily my GP. told me to try diet control first before meds.
Lucky she did because until I came on this forum I wouldn't have know it was unnecessary to take them at my reading level.
