I'm going out for the weekend tomorrow:, doing a party on sunday, we're having a BBQ, buffet etc... I am getting jittery now at the thought of what to eat and what to do about alcohol, I'd love to have a drink, just punch or wine, I've read somewhere that wine is ok as long as you reduce your insulin. is this right and by how much.? The thought of doing all this and not having a drink or a piece of cake is not fair... so to wine or not to wine... that is the question?

Definitely have the wine. I've never had to reduce my insulin for wine BUT it is a good idea to have some carbohydrate and to check your BGs reasonsably regularly to make sure that your sugar is not going low. I've been drinking alcohol for 26 years (been diabetic for 40 years) and never had a problem apart from once when I was sixteen and drank too much lager, didn't eat enough and though it was funny to put the empty cans on a stags head in the house where the party was..........and lesson learnt was not to drink on an empty stomach. But we often drink wine most evenings and sometimes at lunchtime at the weekends with absolutely no problems. If you have the punch you may need to have extra insulin to allow for any non-alcohol liquid that has been added to it that may have carbohydrates e.g. fruit juice. My suggestion would be for the few hours that you are out run your sugars a little higher than normal around the 8 level and enjoy yourself!!:D

PS there is also no reason why you should not have cake as long as you have the appropriate amount of insulin. Out of nosiness how long have you been diabetic?

Only 7months AJ... so I don't really know the in's and out's too well. But I am going to enjoy myself this weekend now!! Open up that wine!!! lol and Thanks I will enjoy!! (Anyway - got to toast the birthday girl.... she's almost 90 !! (my mum))

Happy Birthday to your mum! This must be a steep learning curve for you - I guess that after so many years I take things reasonably for granted although I'm always learning as well. The joy (???) of being on insulin is that you can match it to what you eat provided you are on a bolus dose that does that. Have a wonderful weekend.

The answer...

TO WINE!!!

enjoy it but play it safe, if it were me I would have to have the cake too to help the booze out! Test more and keep it safe! I fancy a drink to night now cheers! Just need to find some cake now. I generally need less insulin if on a bender and defo less in the morning, by lunch I'm back on normal ratios (whatever they are!)

Enjoy it!

Rossi 🙂

Yes, I find I'm learning new things almost daily. It's just bolusing for all these snacks that we're having and remembering just to eat in one sitting, not pick all night long like I used to!! My Mum, bless her is 90! and never had a days illness that I can recall, not on any pills whatsoever and is fit as a fiddle. (if you know how fit a fiddle is??) Not really fair is it? lol she'll be stuffing cake all night knowing her !!

Basically alcohol needs to be processed by the liver before it can be broken down and sent our of the body via the normal channels. While the liver is doing this, it stops secreting glucose, so your basal insulin will be working away lowering your BG but your liver will be taking an alcohol break.

So keep testing, drink in moderation and see what happens. You are more likely to go hypo several hours later than at the time, so maybe have some long term carbs overnight. Maybe a packet of crisps before bed or something that works for you.

Enjoy it and don't worry overly. Just be aware and enjoy the cake and booze. If you go high and have to adjust, it won't hurt you as a one off.🙂
