Is this a possible sugar substitute for type 1's? I can't bear the aspartame sweetners and just tried the new Truvia which is even worse! I only need something to sweeten my porridge in the mornings!

If you're really sparing and add it on to the carb total, you can use honey as a sweetener.

Just try to resist ading the whole jar or it defeats the object ! :D

(or dipping the spoon in and licking it. Repeatedly 😱)

....and would you believe for the first time today I have heard about carb counting! I think I have missed something very important here!

Did you know that I only caught up with it in 2010 when I joined the forum (although I'd heard of it, I didn't know much about it).

There doesn't seem to be a catch-up service for longer term diabetics who have missed out on some education.

Pooh, I got mine in January 2008, when I'd been diabetic for 35.5 years!

I seriously wondered (and still do) however I'd stayed alive all those years!

To answer the original question, though not a T1 I occasionally use Agave nectar instead of golden syrup, afraid I don't have sweetener on porridge or drinks. It does have a taste, but not too dissimilar to golden syrup, depends on who has made it. Doesn't seem to do me much harm but it is fructose at the end of the day so you would have to try it and see. Perhaps got a bottle from your supermarket (sainsburys sell 250ml bottles for ?2.50)

Bought my last lot from gojoking at ?15.99 a litre, but they do sell it down to 250ml for ?5.75. It's a lot darker than the supermarket bottles.
They sell lots of other stuff and have lots of info on their site: www.gojoking.co.uk.

Hi Sandy,
Sweet freedom tastes ok as well, but again watch the carbs with it.

I was about to say the same as Sue, Sweet Freedom is another good one.I have tried it, its available at Tesco and Morrisons.

John.

Try the Sucralose based sweeteners like Splenda, the best tasting sweeteners in my opinion

I totally agree with RHepton. Splenda is the nearest tasting to sugar I've found.

Truvia was very disappointing, and like you say it costs too! The smell was quite off putting but the taste? bleughhhhhhhh! :(

Splenda is fab I use it a lot for cooking 🙂 The sweet freedom is lovely though for the extra bits like a drizzle on puds or poridge can be used in cooking as well.
