Relationship to Diabetes
At risk of diabetes
Hi, I looking for some advice before trying to get an appointment with gp.
So, my mum was type 1 diabetic.
I have in the past few months health issues which are now showing some similar to when mum was diagnosed. For example always thirsty, dry mouth, so tired all the time.
I have started checking my blood sugars and they 6.7 on waking, 7.4 2 hours after eating and 8.8 before bed.
Should I be concerned?
Thanks in advance

Hi @lisaw2000 🙂 The blood glucose meters aren’t for diagnostic purposes so if you’re concerned, it’s best to speak to your GP. They can do an HbA1C test (blood from your arm).

Your blood sugars don’t scream Type 1 to me. My blood sugar was approaching 30 when I was diagnosed. In people without diabetes, blood sugar can go as high as the 10s after a large meal. Remember that the glucose meters have a margin of error too (up to 15%) so any figure you get is only an approximation.

Being thirsty is definitely a symptom of diabetes but you didn’t mention the main Type 1 one I had - almost constant urination. Lots of things can cause a dry mouth and tiredness, so if you don’t have diabetes, it would be worth a general check over to see if any cause can be found.

Hi.
As @Inka says, those BG readings are within a range that a non diabetic person could see depending on what they had eaten and when. They certainly don't suggest Type 1 at this time.
With diabetes the extreme thirst is caused by the kidneys trying to remove excess glucose from the blood into your urine.... so the thirst is a consequence of the increased urination rather than a symptom in itself. The kidneys don't do this until BG levels become consistently high, usually persistent mid teens or above, so I would say that your thirst is not associated with diabetes and may need investigating if it is significant and causing you a problem.

For me the thirst was totally unquenchable..... I could drink a pint of water straight down and still be thirsty when the glass was empty and I was going to the loo 5-6 times a night and desperately drinking water straight afterwards, as well as during the day. After 2 weeks of that I was a walking, weeing zombie  and I think my BG level was 16 (HbA1c was 112) when I eventually went to the doctors and got tested.

I hope you are able to get to the bottom of the problem but at this time I would say that Diabetes is very unlikely to be the culprit.

Thank you for your advice.
If I can explain a little more about my concerns.
I have other health issues being fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis and high blood pressure.
I should also say that I have gained weight because of my lack of exercise because of the pain and tiredness.
I was wondering if it was bordering on type 2
Yesterdays BG was am 6.9 after eating 8.2 and bedtime 9.2.
It’s tricky to get an appointment as it is and was wondering with all the advice on this forum if I was under wasting GP time (their words)

Thank you for your help

You wouldn’t be wasting their time @lisaw2000 Speak to them and see if you can have an HbA1C blood test (and maybe some others to rule out other causes eg anaemia, etc, etc). Type 2 diabetes starts gradually and it’s easy to miss the signs. Having an HbA1C result would be informative for you 🙂

Those numbers do look consistent with "bordering on T2" to me & I think it would certainly be worthwhile to have an HbA1c test.

Hope you can manage to get an appointment without too much bother @lisaw2000

Let us know what you find out.
