Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi all, new poster here looking for advice from a fellow type2er.

For the last week or two my readings have been climbing despite no change in my diet. Unfortunately my blood pressure has also risen and thats been ongoing for about a month.

I saw my Doctor this week and he wants to lower my bp first and has upped my tablets. Im due back to see him this coming midweek but my main concern has turned to my diabetes.
My readings since I was first diagnosed about 6 years ago, have hardly risen more than 10 and those were during sickness. All in all I have controlled my diabetes well. Lets just say I was fit enough to walk up Ben Nevis two years ago and clamber over a glacier on Iceland this year.

Until now!!! About two weeks ago I had readings of 16, 17, 18. Half an hour ago 22.4.
Can anyone give me some advice.

Hi mentalhibby, welcome to the forum 🙂 That's quite a hike, I'm surprised the doctor doesn't want to try and tackle it at the same time as the BP, can't think of any incompatibility in the treatments  Have you made any changes to your diet? (sorry, I'm sure you've considered this).

I think I would try and restrict my carb intake for a while and see what effect this had.

Thankyou Northerner.

Doc thought it may be stress induced. Have had a lot of negative things going on true enough but ive been stressed before and never felt like this. He did say there is a tablet he wants to give me but as im on 4 x 500mg metmorfin hed rather wait another week and see. But heading into 20's? Yep im getting a wee bit perplexed lol

Well not only restrict your carbs, but get to Boots or other large chemists, and buy some 'Ketone Testing Strips' - these are strips you dip in your pee - so you'll have to collect some, but you are most likely peeing for England with those BGs anyway.

If the result shows more than - say - +1 or thereabouts, I'd get meself to A&E.

Thanx trophywench. I pee for Scotland thankyou very much. 🙂
Ill give it a try.

One other strange thing ive noticed. Readings higher in the morning than they were when I went to bed. Sourced web. Found sites which tell you what your body is doing but not why?

Your liver releases extra glucose as you wake in order to give you a 'boost' to start the day - fine if you don't have diabetes, but not great if you do! Some people suffer this more than others. Also, you can be more insulin resistant in the mornings, so this can keep levels elevated.

Hi again. Its been a week since I came into your chatrooms looking for advice.
Went to see Doctor midweek and showed him a detailed record of my blood readings. He gave me another tablet to augment my 4 daily metformin. Unfortunately my numbers are still in the high teens/ low twenties. I am feeling very poorly now and tonight ive come to bed feeling nauseous. My readings today haven't been lower than 17 and im getting very frustrated. Doc signed me off for two weeks which obviously has made me relax but nothing seems to be lowering my numbers. Can anyone just give me some fresh ideas or anyone had same probs that can advise me. Please!!!!

Got stix trophywench. No probs shown up on test.

I'm puzzled.

Are you more nauseous after eating than other times? and dizzy-ish, with it?

If it doesn't improve by tomorrow, please do go to A & E - I'm concerned it's HHS - see http://www.diabetes.org.uk/Guide-to-diabetes/Complications/Hyperosmolar_Hyperglycaemic_State_HHS/

The reason I suggested testing for ketones is that a lot of folk are actually misdiagnosed T2 when they are really T1.5, in which case they would have ketones.

However you could have the T2 equivalent of that, in which case it really really needs sorting out NOW.

Ive looked at the symptoms trophywench and I could say I have them all but as yet I have not list my appetite.
Last night was the first time id felt nauseous. I really felt I was going to be sick but as soon as I lay down I went out like a light. My wife brought me a cuppa at about 9am but I fell straight back to sleep and didnt wake till 12 when she looked in on me again. Tested blood sugar and its 12.4 which is pretty good but I am so tired!! 13 hrs sleep you would think id be rested. My mouth is so dry that I am spitting out bloody phlemgh each morning. I told Doc but he seemed unconcerned and put it fown to breathing with my mouth open. I have 10 days before I see doc again but irs really getting me down now. If I try to do anything physical in the house im shattered in no time atall. I havnt felt this bad since I was first diaganosed s ix years ago. Im on 4 metformin daily and one gliclazide which I cut in half. One half in morning and second in evening. Since hes given me the gliclazide ive felt no difference and my concern is he will just increase it when I see him next. As I type this ive had nothing to eat since 9 last night and dont feel that hungry but I know that whatever I do eat by late this afternoon my bloods will be back up into high teens. In fact, I know this may sound nuts but even if I dont eat theyll still be up.

You can imagine trophywench how frustrating this is. Theres clearly something wrong but I cant carry on like this. Its just nuts! Six years perfect readings then this. Even when ive had bronchitis it didnt get this bad.

I would say don't wait 10 days before you see the doctor again - this needs sorting now given that you feel so terrible and appear to be getting worse, with the nausea starting. I would book an emergency appointment, or possibly even an out of hours doctor. You may get a different response from a different doctor so it's definitely worth getting a second opinion. Or A&E - don't worry about wasting their time, they can at least assess you there to exclude the possibility of anything dangerous.

No No NO No NO !!!

When a Type 1 does this it's a sign of DKA.

For either sort (any sort rather) of D, sleeping the sleep of the dead yet still not being refreshed is the precursor to a full diabetic (ie Far Too High BG) COMA.

That's why it's dangerous.

Please don't leave it.
