Hi guys

I am seeing the DSN for the first time on Monday - up till now I have been looked after by the practice nurse, and my GP. The practice nurse is unhappy with my progress so has arranged an appointment with DSN.

I am taking my records of my BG readings etc, and went for a new HBA1C yesterday (results should be back for Monday) - can you think of anything else she may want to see - anything that would help her?

I assume i may not see her again, so really want to make the most of the time I get with her.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Emma

Hi Emma, great to hear that you will be seeing a DSN 🙂 Have you been keeping a food diary and any records of any exercise you've been doing? If not, don't worry, it's just that these thing would help the DSN understand some of the numbers better 🙂

This is just to wish you luck with it, I am sure you will be fine. If you feel you would like a follow up or a series of follow ups with her, there is no harm in asking her, or your practice nurse for future referalls.

Hope it's gone okay today for you 🙂 x

Thanks for asking guys.

I had my appointment at 6pm. By 7.10pm I had my first Lantus injection..... Low dose to start with, to increase by a couple of units every few days.

Not sure how I feel just at the minute - Its all been so quick. I dont feel unhappy about it though, just not really sure. I'm guessing in another few days / weeks I'll be feeling a million times better, and it'll all be a doddle! I go on holiday at the weekend, so will see how I get on. They have said if I want to stop it on holiday, and re-start afterwards they are happy for that to happen.

Injection was very easy, certainly nothing to be scared of!! And I'm a proper scaredy cat!

Have been warned they will get the dose up on this first, stabilise my fasting levels then probably look to introduce a fast acting insuling to go with it.

What a day!!!

That is quite a day Emma! I do hope the lantus works well for you, and pleased to hear that you found the injections OK 🙂 Any questions, let us know 🙂

Glad to hear the injection wasn't as bad as you thought 🙂 I'm sure you're a natural! Hope the levels come down and stabilise soon for you x

Hi guys
I have been injecting now for a couple of weeks, but my waking levels dont appear to be improving in the way i assumed they would. i did manage one day with 8.5 but rest of time have been 9 or 10. I thought injections would start to work immediately? Im not due to see the nurse for another 6 weeks, should i give them a call to check if i should be doing something different or in addition before the appointment or should i just wait? I dont want to appear impatient but just assumed the bg readings would be tumbling by now!!

You could see if your DSN actually has an email address - sometimes they do.

Then you can poke her with questions occasionally rather then waiting to get an appointment.

I believe Lantus is a slow acting insulin so wouldn't have the same rapid effect on your blood glucose levels as something like novorapid.

Don't know about Lantus but waking levels can be affected by 'the dawn effect' where the body dumps glucose by iteslf. I presume you are on one injection in the morning? If your daytime readings are low enough then you might need to go onto split dose Levemir instead.

You might find this page useful:http://medweb.bham.ac.uk/easdec/prevention/lantusnotes.htm

If you haven't been adjusting the dose then I should wait for your appointment. Have you been told to adjust the dose?

Just lantus once a day at present. Will waitvto see what she suggests next, i think i am perhaps being a little overkeen!!

I feel for you hun....I am in a similar situation. My numbers aren't coming down, and although I haven't been on insulin long, I would have thought i should have seen a difference by now. It's very frustrating isn't it :(
