Trying to get our heads around sports esp football for our 15 yr old -diagnosed 8 th dec-so here goes
breakfast-10 am-4.6 took off 2 units from normal insulin dose
12.10pm -3.4 so 5 fruit pastilles
12.20 -2.91
12.22 -2.7 60 ml lucozade
12.39 3.2
had lunch took 2 units insulin off -also we usually add 2 units to normal dose but forgot to do this-so in effect 4 units less
got to football-2 pm -2.4 so 5 dextrose - he was substitute so continued to monitor blood
2.20pm-3.4 so 5 dextrose
2.50pm-3.0 - gave up hoping to play at this stage and had a banana
3.50 pm got home he was 8.1
any thoughts on why we couldn't raise his levels despite so much glucose and reduced insulin doses earlier in day ? anyone experienced similar ?

That is quite an extended series of lows :( Sounds like you were doing the right things, but it may be that your boy is in his 'honeymoon' period, where his pancreas is still occasionally spluttering out some insulin. If this is the case then it can make things very unpredictable, unfortunately. I've had the occasional stubborn low that refuses to come up, but nothing on this scale. Best to discuss with the DSN and see if you can come up with a plan for the future. Sorry he had to miss the game.

p.s. What did he have for breakfast? Although you lowered his doses, do you take into consideration the carbs in his meals, and did he eat something he has had in the past?

he had 120g of carbs for breakfast as usual (ready brek and muffins)
and 130g carbs for lunch (pasta and tortilla wraps)
so would have thought that was enough

It sounds as if his pancreas is having a final fling whilst in the honeymoon period.
Has his basal (background) insulin been looked at?

I suspect it might be a honeymoon sputter too. Have you checked/tested basal? (if no meal/rapid insulin given does he stay steady?). Basal requirements can fluctuate/change and one of the signals that it is out can be persistent lows (or highs!) despite 'usual' meal doses and/or correction factors

Edit: snap! Posted at same time as Sue!

yes his lantus has been reduced twice but only by 1 unit at a time - he is now on 18 units

hi, i have been diganosed 8 months and still in my honeymoon period and you do find crazy things like this happen, at the mo i am stuggling to get reading any more than 5, but if i took a reading before a meal and it read below 4 i have always been told by my DSN to treat hypo first (so have dextose) then to eat meal and inject insulin after but as i am a adult not sure this would be the same in your case, but i wouldn't inject more insulin if i were low.
best idea is prob to ring DNS tomorrow and ask for advice on what to do.
shame he missed his football!
also what might be a good idea if your not already is keeping a food diary to you can see if there are any trends to what he eats and his levels.
hope he is feeling better now
