Advice needed - diagnosed today

Make a note of all the questions you think of and take this list with you.

In the mean time I suggest start a food diary , with the aprox amount of carbohydrates, yes you read that right carbohydrates.
Then once you have a good idea of how many of them you are eating, then you can start gradually reducing them.

Protein in all it’s forms and providing you don’t have a condition which means you need to cut down on fats, good fats are ok.
Sugar is just a simple carbohydrate , which in the U.K. is already included in the carbohydrate content which is on the nutritional label usually on the back of packets etc.

I hope this helps.

I got diagnosed type 2 diabetic today. The Dr gave me Metformin and Alogliptin, one a day of each. Then said come back nxt week I will give you Trulicity and showed me how the injection works.

That's it end of appointment

I got the prescription and went home. But I'm confused. I have no idea anything about diabetes. I mean it's not a huge shock because I am very overweight but I was shocked at the clinic to be told and I just wondered home. But now I'm home I have so many questions. And why these 2 drugs. And why the Trulicity injections starting next week. And what do I eat or not eat etc what else do I need to know about this condition.

Any advice please
Hello Vvv777 - I completely sympathise with how you are feeling. I felt similarly shocked when told of my diagnosis, and was given the same sort of lack of support by the GP, just that's that, lose weight (with no advice), and a prescription for the medication. Thankfully I was able to find help here, and the best thing you can do over the upcoming days and weeks is arm yourself with all the information and advice, including all sorts of different viewpoints, on this site. I've seen people say several times that you really have to become the expert on your own condition, and although that might sound a bit daunting right now - as you are still in shock I am guessing - give it a few days and I reckon you'll start to feel less stressed about it and a bit more in control. And as is so often said here - just ask, anything and everything.

Welcome to the forum @Vvv777

Sorry to hear that you’ve been left a bit ‘in the lurch’ after your diagnosis, with not much information to get your teeth into, and just sent on your way with a bunch of unfamiliar meds :(

A diagnosis with one long term condition can be difficult enough to adjust to, but it must be even trickier having to come to terms with the Lupus diagnosis too.

If you’d like a good background overview of T2 diabetes, members here frequently recommend Maggie Davey’s Letter and Gretchen Becker’s book T2 Diabetes, the first year, which you can work through gradually and will give you a solid starting point.

Keep asking any questions as they arise too, both here and whenever you go for your appointments.

I'm a newbie to all this to.
As it's been said make an appointment with the diabetic nurse at your practice I know at the moment that could be easier said than done.
I've just come out of a week's stay fully paid by the NHS for C-19 not nice as it's hit me for 6.
I wasn't that active to start with but I've gotta push on and get moving to get back on the right road then start getting my head around this T2 . Good luck and remember at the Dr ask ask and ask again.
