Hi there I hope you are all having a good day.

I had an emergency eye appointment today and my lasered eye has been bleeding:( Anyway, the wonderful consultant, Mr K wants to see me in December. He said I must try not to do anything strenuous or get too stressed about things, I told him I had just started a new job at a Pharmacy, but I also have to clean. I spent Saturday morning cleaning everywhere, kitchen, storage room, other rooms, wiping, hoovering etc, empyting bins and putting rubbish outside. I didn't expect all of this, It came to me as a bit of a shock to say the least, as there is no written job description. Apparentley they do employ a cleaner! but unsure about what she does or when she does it:confused:
The thing is I have to take care of my eyes, no straining, bending down too much, that sort of thing. What on earth do I say to my employer about my eye?, I told them straight away about me having Type 1 diabetes. Could they terminate my job on health reasons? I'm certainly not saying they will, but the two new things are not compatable! I would really appreciate some advice. Thanks lots of love Sheenax I start today at 4pm

try and get the advice in writing so you have something formal to show your employer and see if thre are any light duties you could do until you make a full recovery.

If there is a dedicated cleaner I would have though there was no need for you to clean.

There are people here who know more about employment law than me, so perhaps someone will be along soon who will be able to give you better advice.

Thanks caroline, I will have to find out about that advice from consultant. Sheena

Hi Sheena, sorry to hear this :( I don't know, but I would have thought this would most definitely come under the 'reasonable adjustment' expectation. Is there any possibility that all the cleaning you did brought on the problem? I would not have thought they could sack you because it would obviously be discriminatory if they tried to do it after you told them of the problem! I know that there are several people here with knowledge of these matters, so hopefully they will be able to advise - hope everything works out well 🙂

Thank you too Alan. I did mention I am having Laser surgery ( that was Monday 14 ) and the Floaters strated on Friday the 19th. Mr K said its murky waters in my eye and it may take a couple of weeks for things to settle down. Everyday things are someting we all have to do. Its how do I word this so it doesn't sound as though I am trying to shirk my duties, which is definately not me. I'm trying to rack my brains😱 As far as I know there is no cleaning today🙄 Sheena

I have no advice, just wanted to give you a hug ((((Sheena))))

Sheena, the way I look at it, if you had tripped and hurt your wrist, for example, then you wouldn't be able to do certain things and I have little doubt they would see that was fine. Except it's not your wrist you need to protect, it's your eye - which is far more important! I am sure they employed you because they knew that you would be a good hard worker, so perhaps you could ask them to suggest other things that might need doing that won't put your eye at risk? Also, I wonder if they asked you to do all that cleaning because their regular cleaner would have charged more than they are paying you! 🙄

Hehe that made me smile

Thanks for the good suggestion about doing other things so not to put my eye at risk 🙂 Sheena

Honesty is always the best policy. Go into work and explain the circumstances to your boss and apologise for the inconvenience this is causing to your work schedule, if they are a decent employer they'll fully understand and put you onto light duties. Good luck🙂

Hi Sheena I haven't got any advice but I'm really sorry to hear that your eye is bleeding. If they are good employers they will support you and they should make reasonable adjustments for your disability although this is difficult in terms of defining what is reasonable. I hope that everything goes well when you talk to them🙂

Aaawww thank you too 🙂 I know it might be difficult with me only being employed for a week! so I have to go in a few mins so I will tell them and see how it goes. I hope your eye appointments go well and there are no major problems. With best wishes SheenaX

Thanks toby :D Sheena

Aw Sheena, I'm sorry to hear about this. I guess it wouldn't be so much of a problem as far as work is concerned if you weren't so new to the job. But I agree with what has been said, be honest and tell work exactly what you've told us. Good luck and hugs. XXXXX

Hiya...sorry to hear you're going through this - I know from bitter experience how frustrating this can be!! :( One thing I thought was could your GP sign you a "Fit Note" for light duties only? I am having repeated bleeds due to a vessel snagged by post laser scaring & until I have a vitretomy in 2012 am basically worried about driving to work (it's quite a way) in case the eye bleeds badly en route (I never know how bad it's going to be!)...the GP has been signing me "fit notes" to work from home most of this year, which has helped immensly - maybe you could get one to exclude duties that involves straining etc?

Hope things go ok for you & the bleed clears quickly!!

Twitchy xxx

I dont know enough about any of this Sheena but I do think its wrong that they're making you do the cleaning anyway if it wasnt in the job description,
and anyway, I just wanted to give you a hug too xxxx

Thanks alot Blythespirit, Twitchy and klocky.

I went in today and told the owner about the bleed in the back of my eye and having to go to see the Consultant today. I appologised about it being inconvienent to them and I ned to do lighter things as to protect the back of my eye from strain. I asked him about the cleaning duties and that is part of my job on a Saturday morning. He asked if this was an ongoing problem and I told the truth that it happened for the 1st time on Friday. He said lets see how the next couple of weeks go and maybe they could get me some goggles to protect my eyes. He said he needed someone who is going to work, which I do, he also said he would talk with his partner about the matter and I said I wanted to be honest with him.

My BS was 21.3!!!!!!!!!! when I got home 😱, that is not me, but things have been so stressful today and I'm to try and not get stressful, but I'm finding it so difficult. Also, tomorrow, I'm back to Guys Hospital for work on my teeth.

Take care dear people, lots of love SheenaX

I know when you have a cataract operation - you have to avoid bending and heavy lifting as it can cause bleeding. It sounds like the boss didn't really understand what you said - why does he think goggles will help ?

Sorry that your blood sugar was so high - I hope it recovers quickly- it will be the stress. I hope that when the partners speak they have a positive response.

I hope that Di or Imtrying can give you some infor based on their HR knowledge.

Oh Sheena, it does sound as though the stress is to blame for your raised levels. You've had so much to cope with, having to worry about the eye, and the job, and now the job with the eye and the hospital! But you have been honest, which is all you can do for now. When you get the opportunity, perhaps CAB can give you some advice in case they decide the job isn't right for you. Would goggles help at all? It's not the risk of getting some dust in your eye is it, it's the potential strain which goggles can't protect against - I'm not sure he understood the problem.

I hope things go well tomorrow so you have one less thing to worry about {{{Sheena}}}

So sorry to read all this Sheena and hear of your problems. I can only imagine how you feel with it being such a new job as well. I would agree that the boss didn't really seem to understand what you were saying, I can't imagine that wearing goggles would make any difference. I don't have anything very helpful to add, only that I'm thinking of you and hoping it gets sorted soon. All the best with your poor eye, hope the bleeding soon stops.xx
