Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi All,
i am 30 and i have had diabetes since i was 15, i am currently on a insulin re-set from my new consultant, this is the first appointment in over 10 years, i suffered with diabulimia for over 8 years and for the past 2 years i have been trying to get myself back on track and have had a few step backs in the process, i am currently struggling with my new insulin pattern and in what to eat which will keep my blood sugars from going through the roof, i have a bad relationship with food and really need this to change. i need help with remembering to take my blood sugars and remembering to record them, this is something i have always struggled with, i am the only person in my family with diabetes so seeking help from family is hard as they don't know much about diabetes, any help and advice on staying on track with my diabetes and taking my blood sugar and diet would be gratefully appreciated.
Thank you All
Bekki

Welcome @Bekkianne What insulins are you taking now? Do you have a Libre? I find the simplest thing food-wise is to stick with pretty much the same breakfast and lunch most days. You don’t have to think then.

Also, concentrating on health can help, eg think about good, healthy things to put in a salad and accompany it with some protein and carbs. So, you’re thinking about making a nutritious meal, which can help distract your thinking a bit.

Not buying binge items obviously helps too. It’s just easier not to have them in the house. Identifying triggers helps a lot as well, eg certain times of day, etc.

Hi Bekki

Really sorry to hear that you have struggled with eating disorder over the years but well done for getting things back on track now and looking for support to keep you focused. I have found this forum really good for that and I visit most days. Usually I post on the "Group 7-day waking average" thread which is a bit like a virtual coffee morning for diabetics. We post our waking reading (good or bad) and have a bit of chat. Sometimes about diabetes but more often about things we have planned for the day, a bit of joke and banter and anything we want to get off our chest. It is a great community. We all have our issues, so don't think you are the only one struggling or that everyone gets great results all the time, although some members do seem to manage wonderful consistency, many of us don't. It might help you at least start each day on the right note, by testing first thing. I will post a link to the thread below..Don't try to read it from the start as it is the longest thread on the forum, just jump in with your waking reading tomorrow or whenever you feel like it and you will soon get to grips with it and get to know us regulars.

You mention struggling to remember to test.... Are you still finger pricking or do you have Freestyle Libre or other sensor? The reason I ask is that the Libre was a game changer for me in many respects but particularly in how I view my diabetes and I now see it as a long running computer game where I try to keep in range as much as possible and achieve a personal best Time in Range when I am doing particularly well. Of course, I can't do well all the time and my results ebb and flow but it helps me to stay connected with my diabetes management in a less serious way than it being a serious health condition that needs managing, but just a game that I want to do well at and improve. It also gives me alarms when I am going high or low so that I can take action. Having this change of mental outlook with the Libre has taken a lot of the stress out of it for me. I appreciate that we are all different but just something to consider if you haven't tried it.

Anyway, I am sure others will be along to offer you their support and tips. I know we have a few who have struggled with eating disorders, so may have more practical tips for you. I was a sugar addict and comfort eater pre-diagnosis and for me going low carb has helped a lot with cravings but I know diabulimia is very different.

He @Bekkianne

I am sorry to read of the difficulties that you have been having, but very pleased that you have joined the forum where there is a wealth of experience to draw on.

It will help us to answer your questions if we know which insulins you are using. Also to know whether you are using a Libre sensor.

Good to know that you are working with your team on a reset and we will try to help in any way that we can.

Welcome to the forum @Bekkianne

Glad you have found us!

First of all - a massive well done for reconnecting with your diabetes team for the first time in a while - that’s a hugely positive step. Turning diabetes around can be a frustrating process, and you’ll need to be careful not to trigger the problems you’ve had in the past. We have a number of people on the forum who have experience with diabetes-related disordered eating, so you certainly aren’t alone in having faced those battles.

Diabetes resets can be really powerful, but they are hard work! It often seems like things get worse before they get better, and the inevitable experimentation means that you have to try a few things that don’t work, before identifying strategies and approaches that are more successful for you.

Keep asking questions, and feel free to use the forum as a place to vent and offload about any frustrations among people who ‘get it’. 🙂
