Hi there not been here for some time. Wondered what peoples experience has been like with glicazide. I have been taking the 40mg version and it has lowered my levels to about 7 which was why I was given it. One negative is a slight not extreme weight gain. Any one similar as I was warned about it and how did you cope

I did not gain weight on it, but I took along side other medication.

I have been taking Gliclazide since August 40mg titrated up to 160mg over several weeks. As I understand it, because you need to ensure you are eating enough carbs for it to work effectively and to avoid hypos, the extra carbs can cause weight gain. As I needed to put on a few kilos it worked well for me. I also upped protein and fat intake because I was reducing carbs from 200/300g per day down to 130g. Calorie intake 2000 per day. I had to up the carbs to 150g because I was getting false hypos which made me feel rubbish. Now my HbA1c levels are around 60 mmol/ mol I am reducing carbs again. Keeping calories about the same for now and increasing exercise to help build up muscle mass. Weight seems to have stabilised for now. Will check again after Christmas as I have factored in a few treats.
The nurse did advise me about possible weight gain but I needed to get BG down from over 100 and gaining a little weight was good.

Hi. Gliclazide does not cause weight gain. However it does allow the pancreas to release more insulin which will enable any carbs you take to be converted to glucose and used for energy or stored as fat. The important thing is to have a low enough dose to achieve a good BS level and not eat extra carbs to stop going hypo. i.e. don't feed the medication. BTW don't worry about Calories but think Carbs as the latter food group are the main cause of BS rise. Calories measure Carbs and Fats together and Fats aren't the problem for us.

Thanks for the clarification @DaveB about carb levels and gliclazide. The calorie intake is important to me as I didn't want to lose any more weight. My recent blood tests for BS (hba1c) cholesterol and triglycerides have confirmed my diet changes are working for me as all the levels have decreased since diagnosis.
I agree for most T2 people focusing on carbs rather than calories is effective.

Thanks all for replies. Metformin certainly helped me lose weight and I feel with glicazide a bit more hungry not sure if that is right. It is certainly helping lower my readings so I am working out if it's an acceptable trade off
