Relationship to Diabetes
Hoping for some advice. Partner has type 2 diabetes controlled with metformin. He's been in agony last few days with severe lower right back pain going round and down his right thigh. Doc has put him on tramadol, naproxen, clarithromycin and omeprazole as well as his metformin and diazepam at night. He has no appetite, has a bad headache, has been sick once and is currently asleep. Only managed to eat a banana and have a small amount of soup earlier. I just need to know if he's okay having little to eat on such a large amount of meds ? Any advice or thoughts welcomed. Thanks in advance x

Sounds like his GP is treating him for a bacterial infection with the clarithromycin but has also given him anti-inflammatories, Naproxen with omprezole to protect his stomach and heavy duty tramadol for pain. I’d feel sick and sleepy on that lot with the Metformin and diazepam too!
Has the GP said what he thinks the problem is? Sounds like he needs a scan to find out.

Does he home test to keep an eye on his levels? He needs to try to eat small amounts to keep things stable I reckon. Metformin can cause stomach troubles even when taken with food.

Hope he’s ok soon.

Not surprised he is sleeping, I am sleepy just with taking diazepam. As Amigo said try and get him to eat small amounts due to taking the Metformin, there are some sick day rules in the new members section, but I am not sure how to post the link to it here, they might be worth a read of the type 2 rules.

Thanks. Doc seems to think he has UTI infection as well as the back problem. Given him the tramadol and diazepam for the first three days to allow him to cope with the pain whilst the antibiotics get to work. Unfortunately he doesn't home test and never has done-think that's because he's on the metformin and normall well controlled. I'll keep at him with small amounts as often as possible but he's one stubborn man. Thanks again and fingerscrossed he Is on the mend soon

A UTI might push his levels up anyway but hopefully things will stabilise soon. Sounds like he may need more diagnostic testing for his back though.

Thanks Amigo -I agree. It's bothered him on and off for a few years but never as bad as this.

Uti's are not uncommon in diabetics. They can cause enough pain without having back pain, hopefully he may be a bit more awake once he stops the diazepam.
